Existing users should download their charging history before then, as they won\u2019t be able to retrieve it once the service closes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the standalone app is closing, Charge HQ co-founder Jay Banyer says its smart charging technology will continue through Amber as the company focuses on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging and whole-home energy management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Banyer, the decision reflects Amber\u2019s changing priorities rather than a problem with Charge HQ itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his email to customers, he explained:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmber\u2019s business focus has shifted towards Vehicle-to-Grid charging, whole-of-site optimisation across solar, batteries and EVs, and support for more EV and charger brands. SolarQuotes also noted that combining Charge HQ\u2019s software with Amber\u2019s wholesale electricity expertise had the potential to simplify EV charging for customers using dynamic electricity pricing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Amber\u2019s focus extends well beyond smart EV charging. The company is investing in software that coordinates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rooftop solar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home batteries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electric vehicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dynamic electricity pricing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future Vehicle-to-Grid services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against that backdrop, operating two products with similar capabilities no longer made commercial sense, Amber claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news provoked dismay among ChargeHQ users on social media, one of whom called it a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AustralianEV\/comments\/1uougoh\/charge_hq_is_closing_on_7_september_2026\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmassive kick in the guts\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple people on social media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1737462746527033\/posts\/4367739143499367\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed concern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Amber for EVs is only available to Amber customers with Teslas (although trials are underway to expand to other EV brands). Several pointed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/evcc.io\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EVCC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an alternative, although cautioned that it requires more technical knowledge.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Charge HQ Users Need To Do<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you already use Charge HQ, you don\u2019t need to make any immediate changes. The service will continue operating until September, giving you time to prepare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the shutdown, you should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Download your charging history<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as you won\u2019t be able to retrieve it after the service closes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Continue using Charge HQ as normal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until 7 September.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Choose another charging solution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you rely on Charge HQ to automate your charging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Restore your vehicle\u2019s or charger\u2019s default charging behaviour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the service closes, if required.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charge HQ has also confirmed it will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop subscription billing immediately<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">permanently delete personal data, payment details and equipment credentials within 30 days of closure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact eligible Australian customers separately about an Amber for EVs offer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banyer acknowledged that the shutdown is personal as well as practical:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will miss the app when it\u2019s gone. I use it every day, and I\u2019m sure that is true for many others.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have questions about your account or the transition, Charge HQ says its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chargehq.net\/kb\/closing-down-faq\">Closure FAQ<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should answer most common questions. The company will continue providing support until the service closes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its part, Amber offered an apology to Charge HQ users<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amber.com.au\/blog\/were-saying-goodbye-to-charge-hq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a statement on its website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and noted that those who are not currently Amber customers would be offered six months&#8217; worth of Amber subscription fees for free should users decide to join the energy retailer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Did Charge HQ Matter?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charge HQ succeeded because it solved a problem many EV owners still face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical Australian home might have a solar inverter, EV charger, battery and electric vehicle from four different manufacturers. Most companies build software for their own hardware ecosystem. Charge HQ took a different approach by bringing compatible products together through software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of asking homeowners to replace working equipment, it adjusted EV charging to match excess solar generation, respond to electricity prices and integrate with a growing range of devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That flexibility made Charge HQ particularly attractive to homeowners who had gradually built their energy systems over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SolarQuotes first highlighted the potential of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/charge-hq-interview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charge HQ while it was still in beta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and later interviewed Banyer about the platform\u2019s development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting on the company\u2019s original goal, Banyer wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCharge HQ was built to solve a problem &#8211; helping EV drivers charge from their rooftop solar, across a wide range of inverters, chargers and battery brands, without having to think about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That problem hasn\u2019t disappeared. If anything, it has become more relevant as more Australians add EVs, batteries and smart energy devices to their homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wrapping Up<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the standalone app is coming to an end, Banyer says its ideas will continue through Amber\u2019s EV platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He closed his email with a simple message to the community that helped build Charge HQ:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d like to thank everyone who tried the app and especially those who provided feedback.
