The giant Everything Electric show<\/a> returns to Sydney Showground this weekend, Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September, six months later than planned.<\/p>\n

The organisers pushed the March show back when the global EV market got the wobbles, then used the extra time to stack the program. They’re now expecting more than 40,000 visitors, over 100 EV models on display, and 7,500 test drives across the weekend, which the organisers say makes it the biggest EV show ever held in the Southern Hemisphere. That’s a phrase engineered to impress everyone except Australians, who have heard “biggest in the Southern Hemisphere” applied to every shopping centre, cinema screen and regional water slide since roughly 1988. Still, in this case, the hemisphere can be proud.<\/p>\n

The weird corners of Everything Electric Sydney worth your time<\/h2>\n

The exhibitor list for Everything Electric Sydney runs to 108 entries, and most of it is exactly what you’d expect. BYD, Kia, Hyundai, GWM, MG and half a dozen other car brands with their latest cars all rolled onto the Olympic Park floor.<\/p>\n

That’s fine if you want to sit in a Polestar. But I went through the full list looking for the stalls that don’t fit the pattern: the student teams, the backyard converters, the one-person startups and the exhibitors. When I last visited the show 3 years ago<\/a> – those were the highlights I really enjoyed.<\/p>\n

Three university teams are showing up with cars they built themselves, and this is the closest thing the show has to genuine garage engineering.<\/p>\n
