{"id":11624,"date":"2017-05-18T08:16:08","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T21:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=11624"},"modified":"2017-05-18T08:16:08","modified_gmt":"2017-05-17T21:46:08","slug":"lego-wind-solar-mb0043","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/lego-wind-solar-mb0043\/","title":{"rendered":"Lego Group Reaches 100% Renewable Energy Target"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11626\" style=\"width: 646px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11626\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/lego-solar-wind.jpg\" alt=\"Wind and solar power - Lego\" width=\"636\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/lego-solar-wind.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/lego-solar-wind-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lego greening up with wind and solar power | Image : Lego Group<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lego Group has announced it has reached its 100% renewable energy target set in 2013 well ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The goal was attained with the official opening of the Burbo Bank Extension wind farm, situated off the coast of Liverpool, UK, in which Lego Group has a 25% stake.<\/p>\n<p>The 258 megawatt facility consists of 32 MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW wind turbines and generates enough power to supply 230,000 British households.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work to leave a positive impact on the planet and I am truly excited about the inauguration of the Burbo Bank Extension wind farm,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-us\/aboutus\/news-room\/2017\/may\/100-percent-renewable-milestone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Bali Padda, CEO of the LEGO Group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; This development means we have now reached the 100% renewable energy milestone three years ahead of target.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a tribute to the record 200 metre tall wind turbines constructed at the Burbo Bank Extension facility and to raise awareness of renewables, the company has assembled the world&#8217;s largest Lego wind turbine; which stands 7.5 metres tall and consists of\u00a0 146,000 Lego bricks.<\/p>\n<p>The company says electricity produced in connection with Lego&#8217;s renewables project investments now exceeds the energy consumed at all its factories, stores and offices around the world; which in in 2016 was more than 360 gigawatt hours.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the Burbo Bank Extension, KIRKBI A\/S (parent company of the Lego Group) has a 31.5% stake in the 312MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm in Germany. Comprised of seventy-eight 4MW wind turbines, that facility produces enough\u00a0 electricity to supply 320,000 German households.<\/p>\n<p>Solar power also gets a look in at Lego, with 20,000 solar panels to be installed on the roof of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-gb\/aboutus\/events\/jiaxing-opening-2016?ignorereferer=true#\/pagetopJiaxing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> factory in Jiaxing, China<\/a>. The solar PV installation will generate six gigawatt hours of clean electricity annually; enough to provide for the power needs of more than 6,000 Chinese households. The solar modules will supply approximately 7% of the factory\u2019s energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>Lego has also included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power<\/a> technology in some of its products, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.lego.com\/en-us\/products\/lego-solar-panel\/9667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lego solar panel<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/education.lego.com\/en-us\/products\/renewable-energy-add-on-set\/9688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renewable Energy Add-On<\/a> set.<\/p>\n<p>The company says that over the past three years it has improved its energy efficiency by 16 per cent per Lego brick produced. This isn&#8217;t just good for the planet, but also the company&#8217;s bottom line. Lego produces around 75 billion of its bricks a year.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also researching other ways to reduce the environmental impact of its products.
