Coal gas (not to be confused with coal seam gas), which was used extensively in the 1950&#8217;s and 60&#8217;s, is an example of a fuel with a significant level of carbon monoxide.<\/p>\n<p>The catalyst EPFL developed is based on copper-oxide nanowires coated in tin oxide. A solar-driven system using a triple-junction solar cell (GaInP\/GaInAs\/Ge) and the catalyst achieed a splitting efficiency of 13.4%.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12246\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/solar-catalyst-conversion.png\" alt=\"carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide and oxygen\" width=\"700\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/solar-catalyst-conversion.png 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/solar-catalyst-conversion-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the first time that such a bi-functional and low-cost catalyst is demonstrated,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/splitting-carbon-dioxide-using-low-cost-catalyst-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> PhD student Marcel Schreier, one of the developers. \u201cVery few catalysts \u2014 except expensive ones, like gold and silver \u2014 can selectively transform CO2 to CO in water, which is crucial for industrial applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another of the developers, postdoc Jingshan Luo, said the team&#8217;s work sets a new benchmark for solar-driven carbon dioxide reduction.<\/p>\n<p>While burning carbon monoxide creates carbon dioxide again, &#8220;reverse combustion&#8221; is seen as a way of helping to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s research has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nenergy201787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> in the journal Nature Energy. The work occurred in the lab of Michael Gr\u00e4tzel at EPFL, who is best known for his invention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/photovoltaic\/dye-sensitised-cells\/\"> dye-sensitized solar cells<\/a>; also known as \u201cGr\u00e4tzel cells\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Utilising solar energy to split carbon dioxide has had the attention of scientists for some years. Back in 2007, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories were tinkering with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/409206\/turning-carbon-dioxide-into-fuel\/\">parabolic solar concentrator<\/a> as part of a system to convert carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide.<\/p>\n<p>NASA has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/technology.nasa.gov\/patent\/TOP2-160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working on converting CO2 to fuel<\/a> utilising solar as part of its Technology Transfer Program. The Administration has developed what it states is a low-cost nanomaterial photoelectrochemical thin-film device that can capture carbon dioxide emitted in industrial processes and convert it to methane.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By converting CO2 to fuel before it is emitted to the atmosphere this technology can mitigate the effects of the burning of fossil fuels,&#8221;
