With the taking of the cudgels by state governments to the highly successful feed-in tariffs (can someone please explain that again \u2014 just one more time!), to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessspectator.com.au\/bs.nsf\/Article\/climate-solar-flagships-mistakes-deadline-governme-pd20120222-RPVUG?opendocument&amp;src=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> slow sinking of the fed\u2019s Solar Flagships program<\/a>, to the march out the door of Australian solar manufacturers, its been a grim time for solar fans.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->So in the words of the immortal Hanrahan: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.middlemiss.org\/lit\/authors\/obrienj\/poetry\/hanrahan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we\u2019ll all be rooned<\/a>?\u201d Well no. Not only are the narks reporting of the slow death of the Australian solar industry completely exaggerated, but solar is set for a big year, with or without government assistance. Indeed bursting out of your correspondent\u2019s inbox this week is the announcement by Solar Systems Pty Ltd that operation has commenced on Australia\u2019s largest Concentrating Photovoltaic CPV Solar Power System in Bridgewater, Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>CPV technology focuses a large amount of sun onto photovoltaic cells to generate electricity and the 500 kilowatt station will be used as a testing and development site for the new technology.<\/p>\n<p>The company \u2014 a subsidiary of the renewable technology firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silex.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silex Systems Ltd<\/a> \u2014 described the Bridgewater complex as a \u201csignificant milestone\u201d in the road to building the company\u2019s &#8220;Dense Array&#8221; CPV technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight dish systems have been successfully commissioned and are operational with the\u00a0remaining eight dishes to be brought online progressively over the next few weeks,\u201d said Dr\u00a0Goldsworthy, CEO of Silex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very excited about the commercial potential of this technology, which is expected to\u00a0provide very low cost electricity from large utility-scale solar power stations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria\u2019s the go apparently as the company is also building another, larger CPV plant at Mildura in the north west of the state.<\/p>\n<p>Wait a minute. Low cost electricity? Large utility scale solar? Sounds like a solar dawn to me (apologies).
