The final product&#8217;s ratios can be tweaked by controlling activity of the organisms and additional nutrients can be added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">&#8220;The protein can be produced anywhere renewable energy, such as solar energy, is available.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">At this point, the demonstration reactor is very small (around the size of a coffee cup) and only creating a tiny amount of the substance &#8211; around 1 gram of protein every two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13422\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13422\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/air-electricity-protein.jpg\" alt=\"Food from Electricity project - demonstration reactor\" width=\"700\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/air-electricity-protein.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/air-electricity-protein-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: VTT Technical Research Centre<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain0\">The researchers have a goal of making a commercially viable reactor totally powered by renewables that could be shipped anywhere in the world; producing food in disaster areas, deserts and other regions where agriculture is difficult &#8211; and perhaps also a model for use in the home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">&#8220;The idea is to develop the concept into a mass product, with a price that drops as the technology becomes more common. The schedule for commercialisation depends on the economy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/ZciXAB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Professor Jero Ahola of LUT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">As well as food for humans, the concept can be adapted for producing stock fodder<\/span><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\"> using a completely automated process with equipment housed in a shipping container <\/span><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">located on farms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/wwHp2g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAO<\/a>, approximately 60 percent of the world&#8217;s agricultural land is grazing land. In Australia, around <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/BdaRG1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 90 per cent of farm land<\/a> is used for native pasture grazing, mainly in our arid and semi-arid zones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">World demand for animal-derived protein is <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/TNcZSW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> expected to double<\/a> by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"DeltaPlaceHolderMain\">If the researchers are successful in their efforts, it could help tackle growing protein demand from a couple of angles &#8211; as a replacement for animal-based protein and to help feed the animals providing it.
