{"id":14153,"date":"2017-08-16T08:17:54","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T21:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=14153"},"modified":"2017-08-16T08:19:31","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T21:49:31","slug":"solar-power-plan-london-mb0169","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-power-plan-london-mb0169\/","title":{"rendered":"Draft Solar Action Plan For London Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14154\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14154\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14154\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/london-solar-power.jpg\" alt=\"Solar power in London\" width=\"700\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/london-solar-power.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/london-solar-power-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">London Calling &#8211; For More Solar (Apologies To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EfK-WX2pa8c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Clash<\/a>) | Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/solar-panels-placement-green-energy-944002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MariaGodfrida<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Meeting the Mayor of London&#8217;s ambitious zero carbon target will require 1 GW of solar capacity to be installed in the city by 2030 and 2 gigawatts by 2050 &#8211; hard targets to reach.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Mayor Sadiq Khan&#8217;s draft solar action plan, which has a special focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">rooftop solar panel systems<\/a>, was released last Friday and proposes a number of actions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leading by example through installing solar wherever possible on Greater London Authority group buildings and land.<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging solar energy installations through the planning system.<\/li>\n<li>Assisting Londoners in retrofitting solar energy technologies on their homes and workplaces through Mayoral programmes and funding.<\/li>\n<li>Providing Londoners with information and tools to make informed decisions about investing in solar energy.<\/li>\n<li>Calling on government to set a national policy framework that will unlock London\u2019s solar energy potential, particularly with regard to small-scale installations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Significantly boosting solar capacity in London is accompanied by major challenges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Half of London\u2019s homes are flats, logistically harder to retrofit and in many cases requires the agreement of multiple stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>28 per cent of the city&#8217;s homes are privately rented &#8211; and landlords currently have little incentive to install solar panels.<\/li>\n<li>London has a high number of leased commercial buildings &#8211; again, incentive can be an issue.<\/li>\n<li>Access issues for homes and buildings for installations to occur.<\/li>\n<li>A large number of unsuitable locations.<\/li>\n<li>Competition for roof space with other building service equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Currently, London has around 95MW of solar capacity in place. While Mayor Sadiq Khan is committed to undertake the actions above to boost solar uptake in the city, it&#8217;s expected these will deliver an estimated extra 100 MW of installed capacity by 2030 &#8211; which is still a long way of the desired total of 1 GW by that time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;London\u2019s true solar potential will only be realised if action is taken by London\u2019s residents, businesses, community groups, the public sector and others,&#8221; says the draft action plan. &#8220;This plan is therefore a call to action to people from across London to make the most of the capital\u2019s solar opportunity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The plan notes the greatest barriers to solar uptake are uncertain national policy and the reduction in financial support through feed-in tariffs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;.. since the reduction in the FiT,\u00a0 the uptake of solar energy technologies across the country, including London, has plummeted and is unlikely to regain previous levels without a supportive policy framework to address delivery barriers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Draft\u00a0 Solar Action Plan for London <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/draft_solar_action_plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be downloaded here<\/a>.
