From July 2016 to June 2017, renewable energy in Australia generated enough electricity to power 7.1 million homes, representing 70% of all households.<\/p>\n

The Renewable Energy Index 2016-17 Benchmark Report, prepared by Green Energy Markets and funded by GetUp!, states renewables comprised 17.2% of the electricity generated in Australia’s National and Western Australian Electricity Markets.<\/p>\n

Green Energy Markets Director of analysis and advisory Tristan Edis said<\/a> renewables represented about 7 per cent of Australia’s electricity supply just ten years ago.<\/p>\n

The carbon reduction achieved through renewables during the 2016\/17 period was equal to 25.4 million tonnes.<\/p>\n

The report notes large-scale renewables is enjoying a boom, with 46 projects under construction representing 2,590 megawatts of capacity at the end of 2016-17; 1,259 MW of that being large-scale solar projects. The total amount of large-scale renewables under construction will provide enough work to employ 8,868 people.<\/p>\n

Large-scale solar already in place and operational during the period generated 664 gigawatt hours of electricity.<\/p>\n

The Rooftop Solar Panel Revolution Continues<\/h2>\n

Close to 150,000 rooftop solar power systems<\/a> were installed in the year to June 2017 according to the report. These systems alone will generate enough electricity to power more than 226,000 homes and will deliver $1.6 billion in power bill savings over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n

The benefits of rooftop PV go well beyond those being enjoyed by owners – in addition to carbon emissions reduction, the installation of these systems supported 3,769 full-time jobs.<\/p>\n

All Australia’s rooftop solar panel systems generated 7,206 gigawatt-hours of electricity during July 2016 – June 2017.<\/p>\n

” Australia already produces enough renewable energy to power 70% of all homes. And that number is set to rise to 90% in a few years. Let’s do this,” said<\/a> a statement from GetUp!.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In a separate recently released report, Green Energy Markets states<\/a> renewable energy’s share of National Electricity Market generation in July reached 19.5% inclusive of rooftop solar and 17.6% excluding it.<\/p>\n

“This is the fourth highest monthly market share (excl roof solar) achieved since January 2013,” said the firm.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
