The team says at speeds of under 60 km\/h, Violet can operate solely on electricity generated by its solar cells (assuming sufficient sunlight of course).<\/p>\n<p>Violet&#8217;s solar array consists of 284 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/sunpower-review.html\">SunPower<\/a> monocrystalline cells, providing a peak power output of 1.1kW. The modular battery system is comprised of 40-80kg of Panasonic NCR18650 cells, which look like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/18650-battery-cell.jpg\" alt=\"Panasonic NCR18650 battery cell\" width=\"516\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/18650-battery-cell.jpg 516w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/18650-battery-cell-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 516px) 100vw, 516px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>18650 refers to the approximate physical size (18mm x 650mm) of the cell. It&#8217;s the same form factor as previously used in Tesla&#8217;s electric vehicles. Based on each cell weighing around 46.5 grams, Violet&#8217;s battery bank could accommodate up to around 1,700.<\/p>\n<p>Violet has 2 x 1.5kW AC induction motors boasting 98% efficiency.\u00a0 The vehicle weighs less than 400kg, thanks in part to its twill carbon-fibre monocoque chassis.<\/p>\n<p>Solar cars have generally been built for performance rather than practical use, but races such as the World Solar Challenge have helped promote advances towards street-legal family vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Violet looks like a family sedan, but uses as much power as a four-slice toaster,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.unsw.edu.au\/news\/science-tech\/unsw%E2%80%99s-sleek-new-solar-car-takes-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Sunswift team leader Simba Kuestler. \u201cShe\u2019s got entertainment and air-conditioning systems, including navigation, reverse camera parking sensors, and there\u2019s even wi-fi aboard. And she\u2019s got plenty of front and rear boot space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s certainly a lot invested in the vehicle &#8211; both in time and money ($480,000).<\/p>\n<p>Violet is the successor to <a href=\"https:\/\/sunswift.com\/history\/5\/eve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eVe<\/a>;
