{"id":16060,"date":"2017-10-23T07:01:06","date_gmt":"2017-10-22T20:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=16060"},"modified":"2017-10-23T09:49:07","modified_gmt":"2017-10-22T23:19:07","slug":"national-energy-guarantee-solar-mb0260","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/national-energy-guarantee-solar-mb0260\/","title":{"rendered":"Butler : National Energy Guarantee Will Nobble Rooftop Solar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16061\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16061\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16061\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/solar-panel-rebate.png\" alt=\"National Energy Guarantee and solar power\" width=\"700\" height=\"381\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Will the NEG impact on Australia&#8217;s &#8220;solar rebate&#8221;?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Mark Butler, says implementation of the Turnbull Government&#8217;s NEG will nobble small-scale solar power and large-scale renewables.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coagenergycouncil.gov.au\/sites\/prod.energycouncil\/files\/publications\/documents\/Energy%20Security%20Board%20ADVICE....pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advice<\/a> from the Energy Security Board (ESB), the Turnbull Government&#8217;s proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/national-energy-guarantee-mb0254\/\">National Energy Guarantee<\/a> will result in renewables making up between 28 and 36 per cent of Australia&#8217;s energy mix by 2030. This range includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar PV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Butler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markbutler.net.au\/news\/media-releases\/turnbull-kills-renewables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> the current Renewable Energy Target will deliver 23.5 per cent by 2020. At 28%, that leaves little room for growth between now and 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We know that if Malcolm Turnbull\u2019s figures are borne out, renewable energy growth will be as low as half a per cent per year in the 2020s,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markbutler.net.au\/news\/media-releases\/doorstop-221017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> Mr. Butler in a doorstop interview yesterday. &#8220;That would slash, by two-thirds, the number of households that can get access to rooftop solar and it would mean that there is not a single large scale renewable energy project built in Australia for ten years.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How rooftop solar growth would be reined in if that was to be the case is unclear. However, it appears legislation doesn&#8217;t need to be changed in order to tinker with the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/rebate\/\">subsidies for buying solar power systems<\/a>. The program can be altered at the Minister&#8217;s discretion.<\/p>\n<p>Given the popularity of small-scale solar in Australia, any attempt to destroy or kneecap the &#8220;solar rebate&#8221;, which is already being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panel-rebate-phased-1st-january-2017\/\">gradually phased out<\/a>, could be met with a huge voter backlash &#8211; something a government already struggling in the polls could ill-afford.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Butler accused the Prime Minister of embracing &#8220;Tony Abbott\u2019s vision of a coal-fired future for Australia,&#8221; and believes thousands more renewable energy jobs will be destroyed under the NEG.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We now know that this so-called \u201cnational energy guarantee\u201d is nothing more than a national energy gimmick. All designed as political cover for an all-out attack on the renewable energy industry,&#8221; said Mr. Butler.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The devil is certainly in the detail when it comes to the NEG &#8211; and more of that detail likely won&#8217;t be clear until next month when the Federal Government attempts to sell it to the states during November&#8217;s COAG meeting.
