{"id":16341,"date":"2017-11-01T07:01:04","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T20:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=16341"},"modified":"2017-11-01T07:01:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T20:31:04","slug":"normanton-solar-farm-mb0283","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/normanton-solar-farm-mb0283\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland&#8217;s Normanton Solar Farm Cranking Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16343\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16343\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/normanton-solar-farm.jpg\" alt=\"Normanton Solar Farm\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Doug Scouller &#8211; Normanton Solar Farm<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Houses and businesses in the Normanton area of Queensland\u2019s Gulf Savannah region will soon be primarily powered by electricity produced by the Normanton Solar Farm.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Situated approximately 5 kilometres south of Normanton township at Lilyvale, a degraded ex-grazing property, the 5MW facility features 16,800 solar panels supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/canadian-solar-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Canadian Solar<\/a> and has been sized to meet the daytime needs of the community.<\/p>\n<p>The North Queensland Register <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northqueenslandregister.com.au\/story\/5024254\/skys-the-limit-for-normanton-solar\/?cs=4741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> the facility is currently contributing approximately 60 per cent of the Normanton sub-station\u2019s load capabilities, with the remaining 40 per cent to be switched on within a fortnight.<\/p>\n<p>The first operating large scale solar PV facility at &#8220;fringe of grid&#8221;\u00a0in\u00a0North West\u00a0Queensland, the solar farm is expected to generate more than 8,680 MWh of clean electricity per year. With plenty of space at the site, there&#8217;s room for expansion as the community grows and a battery system will be integrated in the future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16342\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16342\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/normanton-solar-panels.jpg\" alt=\"Solar panel installation at Normanton Solar Farm\" width=\"700\" height=\"439\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Normanton Solar Farm while under construction<\/p><\/div>\n<p>All of the Normanton region\u2019s power was previously supplied from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installers\/townsville\/\">Townsville<\/a>, approximately 700 kilometres away. The length of transmission line between Townsville and the region resulted in significant electrical losses, voltage fluctuations and blackouts. Given the limit on loads and quality of supply, the situation also discouraged further commercial and industrial investment in the area..<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/projects\/normanton-solar-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARENA<\/a>) provided $8.4 million funding support towards the $13.97 million project. Knowledge gained from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.normantonsolarfarm.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Normanton Solar Farm<\/a> will be shared and it&#8217;s hoped the project will further encourage the rollout of renewable power generation across regional Australia, particularly in fringe of grid environments.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Centre will have a philosophy of an \u2018open door\u2019 policy for researchers, providing opportunities for industry, academic institutions or other researchers to engage in on-site data collection, analysis and research,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.normantonsolarfarm.com.au\/outback\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/KA-V2-Community-Information-Pack-latest2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> the project&#8217;s community information pack.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The driving force behind the clean power station has been Doug Scouller, an electrician by trade who moved to the region nearly 15 years ago with view to retiring. Instead, he built a motel and was motivated to start <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoullerenergy.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scouller Energy<\/a> after his electricity bills increased by 500% over a ten year period.
