{"id":16695,"date":"2017-11-14T06:59:15","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T20:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=16695"},"modified":"2017-11-14T06:59:15","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T20:29:15","slug":"2017-carbon-emissions-mb0301","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/2017-carbon-emissions-mb0301\/","title":{"rendered":"2017&#8217;s Emissions Projections &#8220;A Step Back For Humankind&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16697\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16697\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16697\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/coal-carbon-emissions.jpg\" alt=\"Carbon dioxide emissions on the rise\" width=\"700\" height=\"456\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/power-station-pollution-energy-374097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stevepb<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>After three years of nearly no growth, global carbon dioxide emissions attributable to fossil fuels and industry are expected to reach around 37 billion tonnes in 2017, up 2%.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalcarbonproject.org\/carbonbudget\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 2017 Global Carbon Budget<\/a>, published by the Global Carbon Project (GCP), was produced by 76 scientists from 57 research institutions in 15 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The report says the biggest increase is expected in the world&#8217;s factory, China, where emissions are projected to rise 3.5% for the year due to stronger growth in industrial production and lower hydro-power generation resulting from less rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>Other countries are also looking at increases or declines that are less than forecast, and the outlook for 2018 isn&#8217;t particularly rosy either.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Several factors point to a continued rise in 2018,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalcarbonproject.org\/carbonbudget\/17\/files\/International_FutureEarth_GCPBudget2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> said<\/a> Robert\u00a0 Jackson, a co-author of the report, co-chair of GCP and a professor in Earth system science at Stanford University. \u201cThe global economy is picking up slowly. As GDP rises, we produce more goods, which, by design, produces more emissions.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s still not clear whether the current situation is an anomaly, or the start of a trend that will extend beyond 2018. However, it&#8217;s not expected emissions will return to the high growth rates seen during the first decade of this century.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, lead researcher Prof Corinne Le Qu\u00e9r\u00e9 said time was running out to keep warming well below 2\u00baC.<\/p>\n<p>Future Earth&#8217;s executive director Amy Luers said the news of 2017&#8217;s emissions was a &#8220;step back for humankind.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe must reverse this trend and start to accelerate toward a safe and prosperous world for all,&#8221; stated Ms. Luers. &#8220;Fortunately, now it is not only possible, but in most cases makes simple financial sense, to meet these electricity needs with renewable energy sources.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Australia A &#8220;Global Laggard&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Last week, Australia&#8217;s Climate Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/critical-opportunity-report-confirms-urgency-to-tackle-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterated its warning<\/a> that Australia is highly vulnerable to the many consequences of a changing climate and said national efforts to tackle climate change over the last decade made it a &#8220;global laggard&#8221;. It says Australia&#8217;s emission levels have been steadily rising every quarter since early 2015.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Amongst the G20 countries, Australia\u2019s emission reduction target \u2013 a reduction of 26-28% on a 2005 baseline \u2013 is unusually weak, nowhere near what is required for us to play our fair share in meeting 2\u00b0C Paris target,&#8221; states the Council.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie said there was a total lack of a coherent, long-term approach at a federal level to reduce emissions and that the emissions aspect of the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/national-energy-guarantee-mb0254\/\">National Energy Guarantee<\/a> would not be sufficient.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Australia cannot accept anything less than a long-term, bipartisan policy framework that turns away from fossil fuels, and embraces the inevitable clean energy future,&#8221;
