Australia isn&#8217;t one of them.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Countries in the Alliance&#8217;s ranks so far include Canada, New Zealand, the UK, France and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>Alliance members pledge to take action to rapidly phase-out traditional coal power. The Powering Past Coal Alliance declaration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/660041\/powering-past-coal-alliance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To meet the Paris Agreement, analysis shows that coal phase-out is needed no later than by 2030 in the OECD and EU28, and no later than by 2050 in the rest of the world.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The declaration notes the cost of generating electricity with wind and solar power has plummeted and countries moving to low-carbon, climate-resilient economies are already seeing environmental, economic and human health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s failure to join the Alliance doesn&#8217;t appear to be a case of the Federal Government missing a memo about it or will get around to it at some point. According to an SBS report, Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said Australia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/2017\/11\/17\/aust-allies-push-faster-end-coal\">would not be signing up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Tens of thousands of Australians &#8230; rely on our coal industry and it does help lift people out of energy poverty in other parts of the world and provides billions of dollars of export income to Australia,&#8221; Minister Frydenberg reportedly told ABC radio.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s Government holds a different view of the little black rock.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Coal is literally choking our cities, with close to a million people dying every year from coal pollution,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/climate-change-minister-claire-perry-launches-powering-past-coal-alliance-at-cop23\">said<\/a> Catherine McKenna, Canada\u2019s Minister of Environment and Climate Change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Alliance states it will support the phase-out of coal through actions including supporting climate financing and developing clean energy plans and targets.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Unabated coal is the dirtiest, most polluting way of generating electricity,&#8221; said the UK&#8217;s Minister for Climate Change and Industry,\u00a0 Claire Perry. &#8220;The Powering Past Coal Alliance will signal to the world that the time of coal has passed. The UK is committed to completely phasing out unabated coal-fire power generation no later than 2025 and we hope to inspire others to follow suit.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Alliance aims to have at least 50 partners by COP24 in 2018.<\/p>\n<h2>Australia A &#8220;Coal Hugger&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Greens climate spokesman Adam Bandt says Australia\u00a0 hasn\u2019t done anything at the global climate conference in Bonn other than to block real climate action.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Instead of joining with other developed countries to announce a coal phase-out, Australia has aligned itself with [President Donald] Trump&#8217;s US in a coalition of coal huggers,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/environment\/climate-change\/call-for-a-change-of-australias-government-as-anticoal-alliance-gains-momentum-20171116-gzmra5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> Mr. Bandt yesterday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The recently released 2018 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) placed Australia 57th out of 60 countries.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Australia ranks among the very low-performing countries in three of the CCPI\u2019s categories\u2013GHG emissions, energy use and climate policy\u2013and among the low performers regarding renewable energy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/germanwatch.org\/en\/download\/20503.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states the report<\/a> (PDF).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The CCPI has been tracking countries\u2019 efforts in combating climate change for the past 13 years.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/coal-power-kills-mb0125\/\">Coal Kills.
