New economic modelling from Ernst and Young (EY) indicates 20,000 potential jobs could be forfeited under the proposed National Energy Guarantee (NEG), while Doctors for the Environment Australia has warned about potential health implications.<\/p>\n

Commissioned by the Climate Council, the ‘Renewable Energy Jobs: Future Growing in Australia 2017 Supplement\u2019 (PDF<\/a>), states there were would be 20,000 fewer jobs under the National Energy Guarantee<\/a> compared to reaching a target of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030. This is based on the lower end of Energy Security Board projections that the NEG would result in 28-36% renewable energy by 2030.<\/p>\n

New South Wales would be most affected, with approximately 9,000 less net jobs in the electricity sector in 2030, followed by Queensland (4,000) and Victoria (2,800).<\/p>\n

Even under a business-as-usual scenario, there would be 6,600 fewer jobs in the nation’s electricity sector.<\/p>\n

The report also says a 28% renewable energy NEG projection would result in little in the way of large-scale wind and solar power construction from 2020 onwards, an issue the Clean Energy Council has previously warned<\/a> about.<\/p>\n

The Climate Council says new large-scale renewables projects are critical to generating new employment and increasing electricity supply in order to rein in and reduce energy prices<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what the policy is it must drive up renewable energy and drive down pollution. The ambition behind the NEG is too low to do either,” said<\/a> Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In addition to the impact on large-scale renewables, the modelling indicates employment associated with the installation and operation of rooftop solar power systems<\/a> will be significantly reduced compared to a 50RE scenario<\/p>\n

There is still much we don’t know about how the Turnbull Government sees the NEG working to achieve its goals of reducing emissions and increasing reliability. Further details are expected after the Government attempts to sell it to the states at the next COAG meeting.<\/p>\n

“Egregious Denial Of Action On Pollution”<\/h2>\n

In related news, Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) has written to all State and Territory leaders, strongly urging them to reject the National Energy Guarantee.<\/p>\n

“DEA is deeply disturbed by the health implications of the Government\u2019s proposed (NEG) plan,” states the letter<\/a>. ” As more analysis accumulates it is increasingly evident that the NEG is designed to encourage continued burning of fossil fuels.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The DEA says of the 3,000 early deaths annually in Australia from air pollution, about half are from coal mining and combustion of the little black (or brown) rock.<\/p>\n
