{"id":17207,"date":"2017-12-01T04:56:27","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T18:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=17207"},"modified":"2017-12-01T04:56:27","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T18:26:27","slug":"abb-solar-egypt-mb0337","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/abb-solar-egypt-mb0337\/","title":{"rendered":"ABB Inverters Powering Egypt&#8217;s First Large-Scale Solar Plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/abb-egypt-solar.jpg\" alt=\"Solar power - egypt\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ABB inverters have been used at Egypt&#8217;s first large-scale, grid-connected solar farm &#8211; and it looks like they could be in for a particularly tough working life.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Toshka Solar Park is a 20MW project that was commissioned in two phases over the course of this year, with the second phase inaugurated earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The solar plant will add reliable power capacity to the grid in Toshka, which will support agricultural infrastructure development in this area,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abb.com\/cawp\/seitp202\/97325a11ff1c367fc12581e600321532.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> said<\/a> Yasser El Shazly, Executive Director of Complete Energy Solutions, which constructed the project.<\/p>\n<p>The facility features 8 PVS800-IS inverter stations, each containing two <a href=\"http:\/\/new.abb.com\/power-converters-inverters\/solar\/central\/pvs800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> PVS800 central inverters<\/a>. It appears the years ahead could be quite a challenge for the inverters and whoever is in charge of maintenance of the facility &#8211; look at the dust!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17209\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dust-solar-inverters.jpg\" alt=\"dust on solar panels\" width=\"700\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ABB&#8217;s involvement with the project was the complete electrical and automation solution for the plant, including the design and engineering works.<\/p>\n<p>As well as equipment for large-scale facilities such as this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/abb-review.html\">ABB inverters<\/a> are also commonly used in commercial and residential solar power installations around the world and have been quite popular in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The Toshka solar plant is in an area part of an ambitious and very controversial plan by the Egyptian government to turn a desert valley into an agricultural region. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Valley_Project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toshka Project<\/a> involves the construction of a system of canals to transport water from Lake Nasser to irrigate the area, which is part of the Sahara Desert. The goal is to basically create a second Nile Valley to help feed Egypt&#8217;s growing population and attract investment.<\/p>\n<p>The Toshka Project was kicked off in the late 1990&#8217;s, then abandoned, and started again.<\/p>\n<p>Lake Nasser, which is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, was created by damming the mighty Nile River. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Ethiopian_Renaissance_Dam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam<\/a> currently being constructed upstream on the Blue Nile may have an adverse effect on the lake. When eventually completed, the dam will take 5 &#8211; 15 years to fill and Egypt fears a significant decrease in the Nile&#8217;s water flows during this time. This might not only threaten the Toshka Project, but also hydro-electric power generation associated with Lake Nasser.<\/p>\n<p>Added to this are the threats posed to the Nile River by <a href=\"https:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/climate-change-alter-flow-river-nile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate change<\/a> and\u00a0 the pressure of population growth, which is expected to double in the Nile Basin by 2050.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABB inverters have been used at Egypt&#8217;s first large-scale, grid-connected solar farm &#8211;
