There&#8217;s certainly a great deal of interest in Australia in EV&#8217;s, but the lack of affordable models and subsidies along with perceived range issues are proving to be major barriers to uptake.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the uptake of another emissions-slasher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power systems<\/a>, Australia&#8217;s track record on electric vehicle adoption is less than stellar. In June, Australia&#8217;s Electric Vehicle Council <a href=\"http:\/\/electricvehiclecouncil.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/State-of-EVs-in-Australia-2017.compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> there were approximately 1700 EV sales in Australia in 2015, and last year that figure dropped to around 1,300.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/electric-vehicle-sales.png\" alt=\"Australian electric vehicle sales\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just 2% of Australian EV sales were to government buyers in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The MoU will see the development of a plan to increase the share of electric vehicles in the fleets of the document&#8217;s signatories, which are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Australia<\/li>\n<li>Victoria<\/li>\n<li>Western Australia<\/li>\n<li>Australian Capital Territory<\/li>\n<li>City of Adelaide<\/li>\n<li>City of Hobart<\/li>\n<li>City of Darwin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s important that we are at the forefront of a transition to lower-emission vehicles in Australia \u2013 both to reduce greenhouse gases and other emissions, and to keep pace with global competitors,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premier.sa.gov.au\/index.php\/ian-hunters-news-releases\/8387-national-climate-action-leaders-commit-to-electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> said<\/a> South Australia&#8217;s Climate Change Minister, Ian Hunter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adelaide has already started attracting attention in the EV sector. In September <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/navya-adelaide-driverless-ev-mb0208\/\">we reported<\/a> France\u2019s Navya, which produces autonomous electric vehicles, will be establishing its Asia-Pacific manufacturing facility in Adelaide. One of the things that attracted Navya to South Australia was the state&#8217;s renewable energy street- cred.<\/p>\n<p>In October, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofadelaide.com.au\/explore-the-city\/city-travelling-transport\/green-travel\/electric-vehicle-charging-points\">eight EV charging stations<\/a> were opened in Adelaide&#8217;s CBD, including four Tesla superchargers.<\/p>\n<p>ACT Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Shane Rattenbury said the MOU seeks to change Australia&#8217;s tardy EV uptake through cooperative efforts such as implementing more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev-chargers\/public\/\">charging stations<\/a> across participating jurisdictions &#8211; and he sees a special role for the ACT.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCanberra is fast becoming a hub for renewable energy and clean technologies, and is the ideal place for electric vehicle initiatives,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmd.act.gov.au\/open_government\/inform\/act_government_media_releases\/rattenbury\/2017\/driving-climate-action-through-electric-vehicle-mou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Minister Rattenbury. &#8220;Our transition to 100% renewable energy means EVs can be recharged here without creating greenhouse gas emissions.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Rattenbury also stated the ACT is the only jurisdiction in Australia to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/2928\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Vehicles Stamp Duty Scheme<\/a> to encourage the purchase of low- emission vehicles. Under the scheme, vehicles with an &#8220;A&#8221; rating (Up to 130g of carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre) attract $0 in duty.
