It&#8217;s all too meta for me!)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The reasons why I say 2017 has been a good year are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">cost of solar power<\/a> has continued to decline.<\/li>\n<li>Australia is in a mini-boom of renewable generating capacity construction.<\/li>\n<li>The fact that renewable energy is cheaper than building new coal power stations has sunk into all but the thickest skulls.<\/li>\n<li>Australia now has around 6.8 gigawatts of solar capacity.\u00a0 Mostly on roofs, but an increasing amount in solar farms.<\/li>\n<li>Trump is still just a normal President and not yet President for life or Hair <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/F%C3%BChrer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fuhrer<\/a><sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/merry-christmas-happy-old-year\/#en-17835-1' id='enref-17835-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(17835)'>1<\/a><\/sup> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Wizard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Wizard<\/a> of America.<\/li>\n<li>The Australian Federal Government&#8230;\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;ll skip over Australian politics and our emission levels.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t really fit in with my theme of 2017 being a pretty good year&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Looking at world carbon dioxide emissions, I see they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-global-co2-emissions-set-to-rise-2-percent-in-2017-following-three-year-plateau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">risen by 2%<\/a>.\u00a0 Okay, that&#8217;s not good, but surely this has to be the last time it rises?\u00a0 I mean, how stupid are we?\u00a0 Either we get emissions under control soon or we have to give back the <em>sapiens<\/em> at the end of our species&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homo_sapiens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">name<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Okay, so I have to admit 2017 wasn&#8217;t a complete success, but looking on the bright side, renewable energy is winning the war against coal and my horse did not die.\u00a0 That&#8217;s two clear wins and one loss for the pie company.<\/p>\n<h2>Even The Australian Government Now Recognizes Renewables Are Cheaper Than Coal<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liddell_Power_Station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liddell black coal power station<\/a> in NSW is an <a href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/agl-shuts-down-liddell-coal-fired-power-station-units-for-repairs-12915\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unrealiable<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/two-units-down-at-nsw-power-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clapped out<\/a>, toxin spewing, greenhouse gas emitting monster.\u00a0 It was rated as two gigawatts but is in such lousy condition it has been downgraded to 1.68 gigawatts &#8212; provided it can actually get all its units working at the same time.\u00a0 While not quite as deadly per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated as the now closed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hazelwood_Power_Station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hazelwood power station<\/a>, like all coal power stations it&#8217;s still a killer, taking out locals with toxins and people around the world through climate change.\u00a0 The good news is it is going to be permanently closed in 2022.\u00a0 The bad news was the Coalition wanted to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to keep it alive for another five years so it could continue to work at making us dead.\u00a0 They wanted to do this because&#8230; coal?<\/p>\n<p>They never actually offered a good reason.\u00a0 They claimed it would be more reliable than renewables but the fact coal generators <a href=\"https:\/\/leadingedgeenergy.com.au\/coal-fired-generators-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keep breaking down<\/a> makes that laughable.\u00a0 Maybe their motive was simply that all the children in NSW had been naughty and rather than put coal in their stockings they decided it would be more efficient to have them absorb coal through their lungs in incinerated aerosol form?<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the owner of the plant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installer-review\/agl-solar\/\">AGL<\/a>, made it clear they were not about to waste money extending the life of Liddell and stated they were going to take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/liddell-power-plans-mb0354\/\">much cheaper option<\/a> of investing in solar and wind power along with dispatchable capacity consisting mostly of gas peak generators and 250 megawatts<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/merry-christmas-happy-old-year\/#en-17835-2' id='enref-17835-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(17835)'>2<\/a><\/sup> of battery storage.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, the Federal Government appears to have accepted AGL&#8217;s decision.\u00a0 I was fully expecting Tony Abbot to tear off his shirt and cry, &#8220;Grease me up, woman!&#8221; like an ugly version of Willie the groundskeeper and start mining coal himself like one of Stalin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stakhanovite_movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stakhanovites<\/a> with the intention of running the entire power station alone if he had to.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17872\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WQVeQlR.gif\" alt=\"GREASE ME UP!\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But apparently all you have to do to get the Coalition to listen to you is be a giant corporation with a market capitalization of $16 billion.\u00a0 If I&#8217;d known that, I would have become one ages ago.\u00a0 Now the Coalition appears to have seen the light, the only people who think coal is cheaper than renewables would be those who pay attention to the Rupert Murdoch media empire.\u00a0 But surely there couldn&#8217;t be many of them, as it would be nuts to allow a single person control more than <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_assets_owned_by_News_Corp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one or two newspapers<\/a> in a country.<\/p>\n<h2>2017 Has Been A Good Year For Solar<\/h2>\n<p>By now Australia will have <a href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/9-solar-pv-records-broken-in-australia-in-2017-and-one-for-batteries-10287\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">installed more solar capacity in this year<\/a> than any other.\u00a0 This is a good thing, but I will point out this is only a very small increase over other years, as this graph I lifted from the <a href=\"http:\/\/apvi.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian PV Institute<\/a> shows:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/pvcap.jpg\" alt=\"Total PV Installed\" width=\"1165\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/pvcap.jpg 1165w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/pvcap-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/pvcap-768x318.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/pvcap-1024x425.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1165px) 100vw, 1165px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, installations have been pretty steady over the last seven or so years.\u00a0 This means we haven&#8217;t exactly broken the old record by leaps and bounds, so we probably don&#8217;t want to start coughing up vertebrae as a result of patting ourselves on the back too hard.\u00a0 But because large scale solar farms are starting to take off, the line on the graph is likely to curve upwards as the total PV installation rate accelerates.<\/p>\n<h2>Large Scale Solar Is Taking Off<\/h2>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s largest solar farm was completed near Nyngan in March 2015.\u00a0 It was 102 megawatts and we haven&#8217;t built anything close to that size since.\u00a0 But solar farm construction is now getting underway thanks to costs falling far enough so that, in good locations, no additional funding is required beyond the large scale portion of Australia&#8217;s soon to be completed Renewable Energy Target<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/merry-christmas-happy-old-year\/#en-17835-3' id='enref-17835-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(17835)'>3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Australian solar farms of one megawatt or more built this year and currently supplying electricity are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kidston Phase One (Part of the Kidston pumped hydro scheme in North Queensland) &#8212; 50 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>Barcaldine Solar Farm &#8212; 25 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>Sunshine Coast Solar Farm &#8212; 15 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>Coober Pedy &#8212; 9 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>Chillamurra Solar &#8212; 4.77 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>NAWMA &#8211; LFG &#8212; 2.393 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>Todae Solar CSU 1.8MW &#8211; Wagga Wagga &#8212; 1.769 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>Yalumba Winery Solar system (Angaston) &#8212; 1.14 megawatts<\/li>\n<li>University of Southern Queensland&#8217;s car park solar array in Toowoomba &#8212; 1.09 megawatts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Altogether these total just over 110 megawatts, which isn&#8217;t much considering the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kurnool_Ultra_Mega_Solar_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kurnool Ultra Solar Mega Park<\/a> in India has one gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) of capacity.\u00a0 But what is important is the price has come down and solar farms are now competing with <a href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/telstra-signs-up-for-429mw-wind-farm-at-stunning-low-cost-13414\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind power<\/a> as the cheapest new generating capacity in Australia and costs will continue to fall.<\/p>\n<p>The cheapest solar power in the United States has been bid in at around <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/12\/20\/usa-cheapest-solar-austin-texas-2-5%C2%A2-kwh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3.2 Australian cents<\/a> a kilowatt-hour for a solar farm in Texas that will come online in 2020.\u00a0 There is no particular reason why Australia can&#8217;t eventually get down to that price level as well.\u00a0 Or at least no reason apart from slightly higher capital costs<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/merry-christmas-happy-old-year\/#en-17835-4' id='enref-17835-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(17835)'>4<\/a><\/sup> and greater currency risk, but that only amounts to a speed bump that will slow things down a little.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a show stopper like a speed brumby<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/merry-christmas-happy-old-year\/#en-17835-5' id='enref-17835-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(17835)'>5<\/a><\/sup>, so between rooftop solar, solar farms, and wind power, we can expect renewables to dominate the electricity sector in the not too distant future.<\/p>\n<h2>Unfortunately Emissions Are Up<\/h2>\n<p>Australia and Turkey are the only two developed nations to have broken fossil fuel emission records this year.\u00a0 Turkey&#8217;s excuse is they had a blistering 11% economic growth rate.\u00a0 Australia&#8217;s excuse is we apparently don&#8217;t believe our continent is hot or deserty enough yet.\u00a0 After all, at the moment Tasmania is only catching on fire once every four years.\u00a0 If we work at it I&#8217;m sure we can get it down to two.<\/p>\n<p>We have a small excuse in that our population growth rate is higher than that of other developed countries, but maybe that makes it more important not to disrupt the climate and make it more difficult to feed people or provide them with fresh water?\u00a0 After all, we don&#8217;t all have Tony Abbott&#8217;s ability to subsist entirely off chunks of coal, gravel, and the occasional raw onion.<\/p>\n<p>While CO2 emissions are down in almost every developed country, an improving world economy has resulted in total emissions increasing and they are estimated to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-global-co2-emissions-set-to-rise-2-percent-in-2017-following-three-year-plateau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">risen by 2%<\/a> after three years of almost zero growth.\u00a0 The increase is unfortunate, but the previous three years of almost no change show we are close to turning things around and hopefully we will soon see large falls in emissions.\u00a0 The declining cost of renewable energy has resulted in planned coal power stations around the world either being <a href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/china-halts-150-coal-fired-power-plants-84937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancelled<\/a> or delayed &#8212; which means effectively cancelled, as solar and wind power aren&#8217;t about to suddenly increase in cost.<\/p>\n<h2>International Politics<\/h2>\n<p>As far as international politics is concerned I think we have been very lucky.\u00a0 Donald Trump has been President of the US for almost a full year now and we&#8217;re still not dead.\u00a0 He hasn&#8217;t started a single war.\u00a0 He&#8217;s only continued various flying killer robots vs people who don&#8217;t have flying killer robot conflicts that were already underway<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/merry-christmas-happy-old-year\/#en-17835-6' id='enref-17835-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(17835)'>6<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 All you people who said he&#8217;d be the worst President ever must be feeling pretty stupid right now.\u00a0 That stickiness you are feeling is egg on your face.\u00a0 Or in some locations, possibly napalm.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, being nuked by Trump because some third rate Australian blogger called him a bullshit Oompa Loompa balancing a dead guinea pig on his head was the only existential threat we faced this year.\u00a0 If you thought North Korea was a serious threat then shame on you.\u00a0 You need to get your priorities right.\u00a0 You live in a country with dingos but what you&#8217;re scared of is North Korea?\u00a0 That&#8217;s just crazy!\u00a0 As far as we are aware, North Korean missiles aren&#8217;t capable of deploying even a single dingo.<\/p>\n<h2>Hope For 2018<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">Battery prices<\/a> continue to fall and so 2018 could be the year home batteries finally pay for themselves.\u00a0 But I doubt it.\u00a0 Looking at how cheap batteries are to produce in China makes it look like they could pay for themselves at any time, but it takes time and experience to make a reliable battery system and so no one will want to ship hundreds of thousands of low cost units to Australia if there is a significant risk they&#8217;ll end up with tens of thousands of warranty claims.\u00a0 So I don&#8217;t think there will be enough supply to drop prices low enough for them to make economic sense, but it could get close.<\/p>\n<p>But what we are likely to see is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/electric-cars\/\">electric cars<\/a> pay for themselves in a large number of countries.\u00a0 Especially since oil prices look set to rise.\u00a0 Increasing electric car use will be useful for both reducing air pollution and CO2 emissions.\u00a0 But it will take more than a year for them to make a significant impact here.<\/p>\n<p>What we will see is further declines in the costs of solar and wind power.\u00a0 So hopefully in 2018 we will finally put an end to the idea that coal has a future in this country or any other.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a concept that&#8217;s running out of steam.\u00a0 After all, if coal power stations have no future in Australia, the world&#8217;s largest exporter of coal, then it has no future anywhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, another year is almost gone and so to everyone I say, Merry Christmas and a Happy Old Year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[54],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-17835","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-solar-policy","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.2 (Yoast SEO v27.2) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Merry Christmas And A Happy Old Year - SolarQuotes Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Overall 2017 hasn&#039;t been such a bad year.
