{"id":18034,"date":"2018-01-02T07:34:27","date_gmt":"2018-01-01T21:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=18034"},"modified":"2018-01-02T07:35:24","modified_gmt":"2018-01-01T21:05:24","slug":"low-carbon-britain-mb0395","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/low-carbon-britain-mb0395\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain&#8217;s 2017 Low Carbon Electricity Records And Milestones"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_18036\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18036\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/wind-solar-uk.jpg\" alt=\"Low carbon electricity in Britain\" width=\"700\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/wind-solar-uk.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/wind-solar-uk-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/energy-environment-ecology-power-1989341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">seagul<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>2017 was a big year for low-carbon electricity in Britain, with multiple new records set and the halving of carbon emissions in the electricity sector compared to 2012.<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;2017 has been an amazing year for renewable electricity in Britain; we have never been cleaner or greener &#8211; and we are on course for an even better year in 2018,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/updates\/britain-set-greenest-year-ever-clean-energy-breaks-all-records-2017\">said<\/a> Gareth Redmond-King, WWF UK&#8217;s Head of Energy and Climate Change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the records and milestones for 2017 noted by WWF-UK:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>February 27 &#8211; Most electricity production from hydropower at any one moment (4 GW).<\/li>\n<li>March 21 &#8211; Largest amount of renewable generation (19.2GW) at any moment.<\/li>\n<li>April 21 &#8211; the first 24 hour period without coal fired power generation since the Industrial Revolution.<\/li>\n<li>May 26 &#8211; highest level of solar electricity production (8.9GW).<\/li>\n<li>June 7 &#8211; wind, nuclear and solar power generated more than gas and coal combined for the first time.<\/li>\n<li>June 21 &#8211; September 22 &#8211; 52% of electricity generation from low carbon sources.<\/li>\n<li>July 2 &#8211; highest percentage (26.8%) of solar electricity produced relative to national demand.<\/li>\n<li>October 1 &#8211; highest level of offshore wind generation at any moment (4.3GW).<\/li>\n<li>October 2 &#8211; Lowest amount of carbon (73 gCO2\/kWh) generated by electricity at any given moment.<\/li>\n<li>October 28-29 &#8211; longest period without coal based power generation.<\/li>\n<li>December 6 &#8211; highest level (12.4GW) of wind generation (offshore + onshore).<\/li>\n<li>December 7 &#8211; most wind power produced in a 24 hour period (285GWh).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While upbeat about progress in the electricity sector, WWF-UK warns the UK is behind schedule to meet the 4th or 5th Carbon Budgets. It has called for greater support for renewables and Britain bringing forward a ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars to 2030. In July this year, the government announced a plan to ban all new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/dec\/28\/renewables-power-coal-2017-uk-figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Guardian<\/a> reported British wind farms generated more electricity than coal power stations on more than 75% of days during 2017, and solar power also outperformed coal more than half the time.<\/p>\n<p>MyGridGB <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mygridgb.co.uk\/last-12-months\/\">notes<\/a> the following electricity generation statistics for Great Britain for 2017:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gas: 114.0 TWh (41.1%)<\/li>\n<li>Nuclear: 63.0 TWh (22.7%)<\/li>\n<li>Wind: 32.2 TWh (11.6%)<\/li>\n<li>Coal: 19.4 TWh (7.0%)<\/li>\n<li>Imports: 18.6 TWh (6.7%)<\/li>\n<li>Biomass: 13.8 TWh (5.0%)<\/li>\n<li>Solar Power: 9.9 TWh (3.6%)<\/li>\n<li>Hydro: 3.8 TWh (1.4%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More broadly, across the UK, renewable energy\u2019s share of electricity generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/uk-renewable-energy-q3-mb0384\/\">hit a new Q3 record<\/a> in 2017, while gas and coal power experienced a record
