{"id":18048,"date":"2018-01-03T05:32:35","date_gmt":"2018-01-02T19:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=18048"},"modified":"2018-01-03T05:32:35","modified_gmt":"2018-01-02T19:02:35","slug":"australia-solar-electricity-statistics-mb0396","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/australia-solar-electricity-statistics-mb0396\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Distributed Solar PV Electricity Generation Statistics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_18050\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18050\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/solar-electricity-australia.jpg\" alt=\"Australian solar energy electricity generation\" width=\"700\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/solar-electricity-australia.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/solar-electricity-australia-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/solar-panels-installation-workers-1794467\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Skeeze<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Close to 1.8 million solar power systems are now installed in Australia &#8211; how much electricity have PV installations been generating?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While December figures aren&#8217;t available yet, the following are November 2017 estimates of distributed solar electricity generation from the Australian Photovoltaic Institute (APVI).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New South Wales (+ ACT): 190,806 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Victoria:\u00a0 140,389 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Queensland: 231,648 MWh<\/li>\n<li>South Australia: 93,584 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Western Australia : 110,614 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Tasmania : 15,503 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Northern Territory : 7,143 MWh<\/li>\n<li>TOTAL :\u00a0 789,687 MWh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Below are total estimates from April 2015 (since APVI started keeping track) to the end of November 2017:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New South Wales (+ ACT): 3,980,121 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Victoria: 2,725,40 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Queensland: 5,332,281 MWh<\/li>\n<li>South Australia: 2,041,650 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Western Australia: 2,044,609 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Tasmania: 299,109 MWh<\/li>\n<li>Northern Territory: 150,967 MWh<\/li>\n<li>TOTAL: 16,574,146 MWh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As well as saving many owners of solar panels a stack of cash on their electricity bills, these systems would have collectively avoided around 16.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the April 2015 &#8211; November 2017 period if the equivalent electricity had been generated by conventional coal-fired power generation (even more if it was all brown coal).<\/p>\n<h2>The Residential Rooftop Revolution Continues<\/h2>\n<p>The estimated percentage of private dwellings in Australia with solar panels has been progressively creeping up &#8211; here&#8217;s how things looked in November according to APVI:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>QLD: 30.7%<\/li>\n<li>SA: 30.1%<\/li>\n<li>WA: 24.3%<\/li>\n<li>NSW: 15.9%<\/li>\n<li>VIC: 14.7%<\/li>\n<li>TAS: 13.3%<\/li>\n<li>ACT: 13%<\/li>\n<li>NT: 11.7%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s still no shortage of rooftops in Australia that could be utilised for harvesting solar energy, even in states where installation levels are comparatively high.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/electricity-solar-australia-mb0392\/\">slightly reduced<\/a> since January 1, Australia&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/rebate\/\">solar rebate<\/a>&#8221; is still very much alive and well at this point, so a healthy jump in numbers is expected this year as more Australians feeling the pinch of electricity costs switch on to the power-bill busting technology.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re an owner of one of the 1,778,000+ small-scale commercial and home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power systems<\/a> installed across Australia, give yourself a pat on the back for your contribution to the very impressive numbers above and the role you&#8217;ve played in driving Australia&#8217;s solar revolution.<\/p>\n<p>The statistics for electricity generated by distributed PV were calculated by APVI using data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/pv-map.apvi.org.au\/live\">APVI Live Map<\/a> (see the bottom of the page linked to for methodology).
