{"id":18363,"date":"2018-01-16T05:35:44","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T19:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=18363"},"modified":"2024-08-06T13:30:29","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T04:00:29","slug":"unsw-solar-panels-electricity-mb0416","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/unsw-solar-panels-electricity-mb0416\/","title":{"rendered":"University Of New South Wales To Be 100% Solar Powered"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_18366\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18366\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sunraysia-solar-project.jpg\" alt=\"Sunraysia Solar Farm - Univerisity Of New South Wales\" width=\"700\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sunraysia-solar-project.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sunraysia-solar-project-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunraysia Solar Farm To Power UNSW | Image: Maoneng Australia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Claiming it be the first deal of its type among universities throughout the world, UNSW announced yesterday the inking of a agreement that will see it sourcing 100% of its electricity from solar panels.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The 15-year solar power purchase agreement (PPA) covers up to 124,000 MWh of electricity supplied each year starting in 2019 by the 200MW <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/sunraysia-solar-farm-mb0095\/\">Sunraysia Solar Farm<\/a> project; construction of which is due to start this year.<\/p>\n<p>The deal involves contract partners Maoneng Australia, developer of Sunraysia Solar Farm, and Origin Energy, which has been contracted to manage intermittency of solar electricity production during an initial three years.\u00a0 Origin will also be supplying electricity while the solar farm is being built.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis landmark initiative is an exciting step towards realising UNSW\u2019s goal of carbon neutrality on energy use by 2020 and reflects our commitment to making a positive global impact,\u201d said UNSW President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Jacobs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Professor Jacobs said the costs associated with the agreement, which weren&#8217;t revealed in the announcement, are &#8220;economically and environmentally attractive&#8221; compared to fossil fuel based electricity supply.<\/p>\n<p>University of New South Wales staff and students will also have site visit access to Sunraysia Solar Farm for data sharing, research and case study purposes.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the major contribution from Sunraysia, the University has been installing solar panels on buildings at its various campuses since 2005. Much of its on-site solar capacity is installed at the Kensington Campus (692kW). This includes a 112kW array installed on a building at Kensington that was connected to the grid in late 2016.<\/p>\n<h2>Professor Stuart Wenham Acknowledged<\/h2>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unsw.edu.au\/newsroom\/news\/2018\/01\/unsw-signs-world-first-solar-energy-agreement--\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a>, UNSW recognised the efforts of the late Professor Stuart Wenham; a solar pioneer who played an important role in reducing the cost of PV and consequently making agreements such as the one UNSW has entered into possible.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Wenham, who was director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc.gov.au\/news-publications\/media\/making-difference-publication\/centre-excellence-giving-solar-energy-twist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARC Photovoltaics Centre of Excellence<\/a> at UNSW, passed away late last year (December 23) after a battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18365\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18365\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/stuart-wenham-solar.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Stuart Wenham - Solar Power\" width=\"700\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/stuart-wenham-solar.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/stuart-wenham-solar-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professors Martin Green (L) and Stuart Wenham (R) | UNSW<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He made huge contributions to the recent emergence of solar as the cheapest option for bulk electricity supply,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unsw.edu.au\/newsroom\/news\/2017\/12\/pioneering-solar-engineer-stuart-wenham-dies--aged-60\">said<\/a> collaborator and friend, Professor Martin Green. &#8220;This was not only through direct technical input, but also by his performance on \u2018roadshows\u2019, ultimately attracting billions of investment dollars into manufacturing capacity expansions.
