{"id":19067,"date":"2018-02-12T05:35:47","date_gmt":"2018-02-11T19:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=19067"},"modified":"2021-02-10T13:16:19","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T02:46:19","slug":"compulsory-solar-australia-mb0458","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/compulsory-solar-australia-mb0458\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory Solar Power For New Australian Homes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_19069\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19069\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19069\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/compulsory-solar-australia.jpg\" alt=\"Mandatory solar panels in Australia\" width=\"700\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/compulsory-solar-australia.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/compulsory-solar-australia-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/photovoltaic-system-panels-2698109\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ecoenergiafutura<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>A report released last week recommends solar panels or other renewables be compulsory for new homes built in Australia; saying such a measure would help slash energy bills, network investment and emissions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The consultation period for proposed changes to NCC 2019<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/compulsory-solar-australia-mb0458\/#en-19067-1' id='enref-19067-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(19067)'>1<\/a><\/sup> was recently announced by the Australian Building Codes Board.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) and ClimateWorks Australia says while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcb.gov.au\/Consultation\/Public-Comment-Draft\/NCC-2019-Public-Comment-Draft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCC 2019 Public Comment Draft<\/a> includes proposed improvements relating to non-residential energy requirements, there is no proposal to beef up the required level of energy efficiency for homes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The energy requirements in the Building Code were last updated in 2010 and are next due to be updated in 2019,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asbec.asn.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/180208-ASBEC-ClimateWorks-Media-Release-The-Bottom-Line.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Suzanne Toumbourou, ASBEC\u2019s Executive Director. &#8220;There is currently no plan to strengthen standards for residential buildings in this Code update. Further delay means that we will be building to 2010 standards all the way to 2022, locking in higher emissions and energy costs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Introducing Renewable Energy Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Among its recommendations, analysis carried out by the organisations indicates there&#8217;s a case for the introduction of renewable energy requirements for new homes in the Code. While the report&#8217;s focus is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power systems<\/a>, it says incorporating renewables doesn&#8217;t need to be limited to PV or any particular technology.<\/p>\n<p>It also acknowledges there are a number of issues with incorporating such requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In cases where rooftop solar isn&#8217;t possible, exemptions or allowances for these households to purchase near-site or off-site renewable energy could be made.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate finance mechanisms to help reduce the burden of upfront capital costs should be put in place.<\/li>\n<li>Grid integration issues would need to be addressed (not considered as part of the analysis).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>.. But Energy Efficiency First<\/h2>\n<p>While the high-level analysis shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">solar panels<\/a> are already more cost-effective than most of the energy efficiency opportunities identified, the report stresses improving other aspects of energy efficiency first is a more critical issue.
