{"id":20276,"date":"2018-03-26T05:16:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-25T18:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=20276"},"modified":"2018-03-26T05:21:38","modified_gmt":"2018-03-25T18:51:38","slug":"wind-solar-saildrone-mb0518","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wind-solar-saildrone-mb0518\/","title":{"rendered":"Wind And Solar Powered Saildrones On CCS Mission In Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wind-solar-saildrone.jpg\" alt=\"Saildrone - wind and solar power\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wind-solar-saildrone.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wind-solar-saildrone-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A fleet of unmanned ocean vehicles were unveiled in Hobart on Friday in the lead-up to a couple of the craft undertaking their maiden voyage on Australian waters.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Called Saildrones, their first mission here will be to measure and monitor sea-surface temperature, salinity, ocean carbon, and biota (the plant and animal life of a region) off the coast of Gippsland in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/saildrone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Saildrone<\/a> is 7 metres long with the height at the top of the solid &#8220;sail&#8221; (wing) being just under 5 metres. These aren&#8217;t particularly lightweight craft, weighing in at around 540 kilograms, including approximately 113kg of payload equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Wind power is used for propulsion (speed: 3 &#8211; 8 knots), while solar panels charge the on-board batteries that power Saildrone&#8217;s computer, sensor and communication systems. The Saildrone can be remotely controlled through an iPhone app and can stay out at sea for months at a time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Australian Scientists Are Monitoring Our Oceans With Drones\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-zEPdH4ohP4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The fleet of Saildrones may be small in stature, but their ability to autonomously monitor and collect rich streams of data at sea for up to twelve months makes them truly unique in terms of the value they can deliver industry, the research community and ultimately our biggest customer \u2013 the nation,&#8221; said CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Mission&#8217;s Carbon Capture And Storage Connection<\/h2>\n<p>A troubling aspect to the first mission is that it&#8217;s partly to test and validate technologies used for future carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. Ocean CCS technology involves pumping captured carbon dioxide emissions beneath the ocean floor into stable geological formations.<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s something humanity is very good at, it&#8217;s sweeping our dirt under Earth&#8217;s rug &#8211; which doesn&#8217;t always end well. The fact that our oceans are already becoming saturated in CO2, which is turning them <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocean_acidification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acidic<\/a>, is a cause for concern without the extra risks posed by injecting a bunch more beneath the seabed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/seabed-scars-raise-questions-over-carbon-storage-plan-1.14386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> hoping that it stays there<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.co2crc.com.au\/facilitating-carbon-capture-storage-globally\/baseline-submarine-monitoring-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> funding partner CO2CRC:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Marine\u00a0Monitoring Network and Seabed Processes will provide certainty to regulators and the community that CCS is safe to the environment in which it operates \u2013 specifically marine environments where many storage sites are viable.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some suggest CCS, even if it does prove to be viable, is just an excuse to keep on burning fossil fuels and consequently will slow down the transition to renewable energy. Greenpeace calls carbon capture and storage &#8220;a costly, risky distraction&#8221; and points to a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/en\/campaigns\/climate-change\/Solutions\/Reject-false-solutions\/Reject-carbon-capture--storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CCS bloopers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Saildrones will leave Hobart in the next few days.
