{"id":22797,"date":"2018-07-11T13:28:48","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T02:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=22797"},"modified":"2018-07-17T10:49:49","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T00:19:49","slug":"accc-solar-subsidy-mb0663","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/accc-solar-subsidy-mb0663\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWSFLASH: ACCC Wants Solar Subsidy Axed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_22798\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22798\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/solar-subsidy-ending.jpg\" alt=\"Australian solar subsidy ending?\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/solar-subsidy-ending.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/solar-subsidy-ending-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/axe-old-lumberjack-blade-1008981\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">947051<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Solar supporters are in shock after an ACCC report published this morning recommended Australia&#8217;s small-scale renewable energy scheme should be wound down and abolished by 2021.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released its final report for Australia&#8217;s electricity supply and prices inquiry a couple of hours ago.<\/p>\n<p>Calling it a &#8220;blueprint to reduce electricity prices&#8221;, it makes 56 recommendations detailing ways to fix the National Electricity Market.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The National Electricity Market is largely broken and needs to be reset,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accc.gov.au\/media-release\/accc-releases-blueprint-to-reduce-electricity-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> ACCC Chair Rod Sims..<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report states residential consumers have been hit with a real increase of 35 per cent in their electricity bills and a price increase of around 56 per cent in real terms over the period from 2007\u201308 to 2017\u201318. However, its own figures show green schemes have been a bit player. The following figures show each components\u2019 contribution to the total increase between 2007\u201308 and 2017\u201318:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Network &#8211; 35%<\/li>\n<li>Wholesale electricity &#8211; 22%<\/li>\n<li>Environmental &#8211; 20%<\/li>\n<li>Retail costs &#8211; 7%<\/li>\n<li>Retail margins &#8211; 16%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As well as helping to clean up Australia&#8217;s energy mix, the SRES has been a major employer in Australia. Additionally, the SRES is already being phased out. Current legislation means that the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/rebate\/\">solar rebate<\/a>&#8221; started to reduce by one fifteenth every year from January 2017, and it will drop to zero in 2032.<\/p>\n<p>The Smart Energy Council has strongly criticised the recommendation to prematurely axe the SRES.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The one thing householders can do to slash their power bills is to install solar,&#8221; said Chief Executive John Grimes. &#8220;The Federal Government needs to immediately rule out abolishing the SRES. Uncertainty around the SRES will cause unnecessary panic and confusion for consumers and the industry.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Solar Citizens says the report &#8220;missed the mark&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We need programs to make it easier for more households and business to go solar rather than recommendations like this one which will make it harder,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarcitizens.org.au\/media_releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Senior Campaigner Shani Tager.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among its other recommendations relating to solar, the ACCC suggests any costs remaining associated with states&#8217; legacy premium solar tariff schemes should be absorbed through state government budgets rather than recovered through charges to electricity customers. The ACCC notes Queensland has taken this route.<\/p>\n<p>While whether the ACCC&#8217;s recommendation to wind down and end the SRES in 2021 is implemented remains to be seen, the Commission may have just triggered the next big rush on small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/commercial-solar-guide.html\">commercial<\/a> and home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power<\/a> systems &#8211; as Australians tend to mobilise whenever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/rebate\/\">solar subsidies<\/a> appear to be seriously threatened.<\/p>\n<p>The report summary of &#8220;Restoring electricity affordability and Australia\u2019s competitive advantage&#8221;
