Water is pumped into an upper reservoir when surplus electricity is available; usually from wind and solar farms. When electricity is needed, the upper reservoir water is run through a turbine, back into the lower reservoir.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22874\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22874\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/pumped-hydro-storage.png\" alt=\"Pumped Hydro Energy Storage\" width=\"700\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/pumped-hydro-storage.png 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/pumped-hydro-storage-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Hydro Tasmania<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has previously identified 14 \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydro.com.au\/clean-energy\/battery-of-the-nation\/pumped-hydro\/pumped-hydro-faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high potential<\/a>\u2019 pumped hydro energy storage sites in Tasmania; being:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lake Cethana: 5 options from 32MW to 600MW<\/li>\n<li>Lake Parangana: 300MW potential<\/li>\n<li>Lake Rowallan: 600MW potential<\/li>\n<li>Great Lake: 600MW potential<\/li>\n<li>Lake Echo: 200MW potential<\/li>\n<li>Lake Margaret: 2 options, 300MW and 800MW<\/li>\n<li>Lake Murchison: 2 options, 84MW and 500MW<\/li>\n<li>Lake Rosebery: 400MW potential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hydro Tasmania intends narrowing down the list to approximately 2,500 megawatts of potential and says the first project could start construction as early as 2020, with a 3-4 year construction phase.<\/p>\n<p>The information sessions relating to the road ahead kick off in Cressy on July 25; then on to Bothwell (July 26), Rosebery (August 1), Queenstown (August 2), Sheffield (August 8) and Lorinna (August 30). Times and venues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydro.com.au\/clean-energy\/battery-of-the-nation\/pumped-hydro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Tasmania is well on the way to achieving 100 per cent self-sufficient renewable generation by 2022, with a number of wind projects currently underway,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.premier.tas.gov.au\/releases\/community_information_sessions_on_battery_of_the_nation\">said<\/a> Guy Barnett,\u00a0 Tasmania&#8217;s Minister for Energy. &#8220;The Battery of the Nation has the potential to double our hydro energy capacity, create up to 3,000 jobs and generate up to $5 billion in investment, cementing Tasmania\u2019s reputation as the renewable energy powerhouse of the nation.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other recent renewables news out of the Apple Isle, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation announced a $59 million commitment to the Granville Harbour Wind Farm last week, a project that will deliver a 33% increase in Tasmania\u2019s wind power capacity. The CEFC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cefc.com.au\/media\/files\/cefc-announces-largest-tasmanian-investment-with-59m-commitment-to-granville-harbour-project\/\">says<\/a> it&#8217;s the Corporation&#8217;s largest investment in Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p>Also announced last week was the start of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tasmania-solar-review-mb0657\/\">Tasmania&#8217;s solar feed in tariff review<\/a>, which the Hodgman Government says aims to provide the right environment to encourage further uptake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a> by households, while also suitably rewarding those with systems already installed. Currently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/feed-in-tariffs\/tas\/\">Tasmania&#8217;s solar feed in tariff<\/a> is 8.541 c\/kWh for systems purchased after 30 August 2013.
