It was purchased by architectural firm Williams Burton Leopardi in 2013, which then set about renovating the heritage-listed property.<\/p>\n<p>A major hurdle in the renovation was energy supply after it was determined peak energy demand for the finished building would be greater than what the local grid could provide.<\/p>\n<p>Various solutions were examined that were either too expensive or unviable for other reasons &#8211; but batteries proved to be the key.<\/p>\n<p>Six Redflow ZBM2 batteries are currently in use along with three Selectronic SP Pro inverters, providing three-phase power from the basement of the building. According to Williams Burton Leopardi director David Burton the system can be scaled up to 18 batteries if required.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zbm2-installation.jpg\" alt=\"Redflow battery installation\" width=\"800\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zbm2-installation.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zbm2-installation-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/zbm2-installation-768x474.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The main purpose of the system is to ensure that the batteries can supply energy if the building\u2019s demand outstrips the grid\u2019s supply capacity, so it is primarily a peak management methodology,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/redflow.com\/darling-building-beats-energy-shortfall-with-redflow-batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> Mr. Burton. &#8221; But they are also configured to buy power at low demand times to recharge the batteries and when power spikes past a certain price, they dribble energy into the load to manage that spike down.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another benefit of using the ZBM2 is its much lower fire risk compared to lithium-ion batteries, which enabled the firm to save on costs associated achieving fire-rating compliance of the room in which they are stored.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 kWh capacity ZBM2 is the world&#8217;s smallest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/flowbatteries.html\"> flow battery<\/a> and primarily used in industrial, commercial, telecommunications and grid-scale energy storage applications. It also forms the basis of\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/redflows-zinc-bromide-zcell-battery-may-have-the-edge-over-lithium-ion\/\">Redflow\u2019s Z-Cell<\/a> battery system, the company\u2019s home\/small commercial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">solar battery storage<\/a> solution.<\/p>\n<h2>Redflow Batteries In Fiji<\/h2>\n<p>In other relatively recent news from the company, Redflow announced last month it had shipped ZBM2 batteries manufactured at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/redflow-zbm2-shipping-mb0658\/\">new Thailand manufacturing facility<\/a> to New Zealand&#8217;s Hitech Solutions, for use in a digital television network in Fiji.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redflow.com\/redflow-batteries-to-power-fijis-digital-tv-rollout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Redflow<\/a>, Hitech has been operating a five-battery trial site in Fiji during the past year.
