How many panels can you connect to your inverter?<\/p><\/div>\n

It is common practice, when designing a solar system, to ‘undersize’ the solar inverter, by connecting more panels than the inverter appears to be rated for.<\/p>\n

This can freak out some solar customers when they see, for example 3.25kW of panels proposed to be connected to a 3kW inverter in their solar quote.<\/p>\n

Confused?<\/p>\n

Let me explain the nuances of solar inverter sizing…<\/p>\n

A typical solar inverter sold as “a 3kW inverter” can usually have more than 3kW of solar panels safely connected to it, because 3kW of panels never actually produces 3kW of power for the reasons outlined here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, new CEC guidelines, effective from Feb 2013 are much more stringent about how many ‘extra’ panels you are now allowed to connect to an inverter, and it seems that some installers have not picked up on the new rules!<\/p>\n

Here’s an email that came in today (28 May 2013) from Ian:<\/p>\n

My solar installer has explained in detail that a 3kW system would suit my needs.<\/p>\n

I only have one concern before I go ahead. They have quoted 12 x\u00a0 250w Daqo Panels & a Motech 2500-AU inverter.<\/p>\n

I believe this is only a 2.5kW inverter. Could you advise if this is sufficient.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To answer Ian’s questions definitively I have to reference 2 documents:<\/p>\n

1) The CEC Solar Install guidelines issue 6<\/a><\/p>\n

2) The spec for the Motech Inverter in question<\/a><\/p>\n

Looking, first to the guidelines; Section 9.4 – Array Peak Power – inverter sizing tells us:<\/p>\n

In order to facilitate the efficient design of PV systems the inverter nominal AC power output cannot be<\/p>\n

a) less than 75% of the array peak power and<\/p>\n

b) it shall not be outside the inverter manufacturers max input power specifications.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So let’s check that we meet both criteria:<\/p>\n

a)<\/strong> Array peak power = the rated output of all the panels = 250W x 12 = 3000W<\/strong>. \u00a0 \u00a0 Nominal output power (from the spec sheet<\/a>\u00a0) is 2500W<\/strong>. \u00a02500\/3000 x 100% = 83%<\/strong>. So the inverter’s nominal AC output is 83% of the panel array size, which is more than 75%, Cool bananas! We’ve passed the first hurdle.<\/p>\n

b)<\/strong> Inverter’s “DC Max input power”( from the\u00a0spec sheet<\/a>\u00a0 ) is 2900W<\/strong>. Oh dear! This is a no-no. We can’t have more than 2900W of panels, and the installer wants to connect 3000W. This is not allowed under the guidelines.<\/p>\n

So my answer to Ian is: No. The inverter is not sufficient for 3000W of panels. Please go back to your installer and ask him to look at his design again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
