{"id":25992,"date":"2018-11-21T07:13:33","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T20:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=25992"},"modified":"2024-07-02T15:43:56","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T06:13:56","slug":"redt-battery-monash-mb0833","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/redt-battery-monash-mb0833\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;World-First&#8221; Energy Storage System At Monash University Operational"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25993\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/redt-energy-storage.jpg\" alt=\"RedT hybrid energy storage\" width=\"800\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/redt-energy-storage.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/redt-energy-storage-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/redt-energy-storage-768x469.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\nA 1 MWh vanadium flow \/ lithium-ion hybrid energy storage system is now operational at Monash University&#8217;s Clayton campus in Melbourne.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to system supplier RedT, it&#8217;s the largest behind-the-meter C&amp;I (Commercial &amp; Industrial) energy storage system to be installed in Australia and the first of its type globally.<\/p>\n<p>The installation is comprised of 900kWh of vanadium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/flowbatteries.html\"> flow batteries<\/a> (or &#8220;flow machines&#8221; as RedT calls them) and a 120kW C1-rated lithium-ion battery.\u00a0 RedT says using a combination of the technologies maximises their individual strengths &#8211; lithium-ion&#8217;s ability to deliver high power for short periods and a flow battery&#8217;s workhorse attributes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Combined, the flow machine can act as the \u2018workhorse\u2019, doing ~80% of the work each day, whilst the lithium element can be used infrequently to provide the final ~20% of the power requirements.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The system has been installed on the roof of the University\u2019s Biomedical Learning and Teaching Building at the Clayton campus. Working with multiple sources including a 1 MW array of solar panels at the campus, it forms part of the Monash Microgrid currently being deployed at Clayton.<\/p>\n<p>RedT says its partnership with Monash University will demonstrate the economic benefits of decentralised, flexible, energy storage infrastructure solutions at C&amp;I scale.<\/p>\n<p>In October last year, Monash University announced it will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/monash-university-solar-mb0246\/\">fully powered by renewable energy<\/a> by 2030 through a $135 million project called the Net Zero Initiative, which the microgrid is an element of.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) <a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/news\/microgrid-trial-will-help-transition-monash-university-to-run-entirely-off-renewables\/\">announced<\/a> it was partnering with Monash University and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/monash-university-microgrid-mb0420\/\">technology partner Indra Australia<\/a> on the microgrid project, providing $2.97 million to support the Clayton trial.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The project will use Monash University as a \u2018living laboratory\u2019 that will help universities form their own microgrids and take control of their energy usage,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/news\/microgrid-trial-will-help-transition-monash-university-to-run-entirely-off-renewables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> ARENA CFO Ian Kay.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By the end of 2020, the university will also complete its biggest solar rollout, at which point it will be generating 7 GWh of electricity from solar panels annually. What the University can&#8217;t source from on-site solar power by 2030 in order to meets its 100% renewable energy goal, it will acquire from off-site renewables.<\/p>\n<p>Clayton campus, established in 1958, is Monash&#8217;s biggest campus globally, educating more than 30,000 students each year.
