The recently installed systems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>J Depot : 50kW<\/li>\n<li>Noosaville Depot: 50kW<\/li>\n<li>Noosa Leisure Centre: 32kW<\/li>\n<li>Noosa Community Support: 36kW<\/li>\n<li>Cooroy Library: 58kW<\/li>\n<li>Noosa Aquatic Centre 26kW<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mayor Tony Wellington <a href=\"https:\/\/mysunshinecoast.com.au\/news\/news-display\/solar-switch-to-slash-greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-300-tonnes-a-year,57483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> said<\/a> the systems will collectively generate 410 megawatt hours annually and should pay for themselves in around 6 years.<\/p>\n<p>Other systems already in place prior to these installations were 112 panels (total capacity not provided) + battery storage at Peregian Digital Hub and a system on Council\u2019s Tewantin administration building.<\/p>\n<h2>Zero Emissions By 2026<\/h2>\n<p>Installing the solar systems was one of the pledges Council made as a foundation member of the Climate Council&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/citiespowerpartnership.org.au\/\">Cities Power Partnership<\/a> &#8211; and there&#8217;s more PV to come; for example, Noosa Aquatic Centre&#8217;s array will be expanded to 100kW.<\/p>\n<p>Council has also set a goal to reduce its net emissions to zero by 2026. The Zero Emissions Noosa Plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noosa.qld.gov.au\/documents\/40217326\/40227860\/Zero%20Emissions%20Organisational%20Strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be viewed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSolar is an important part of Council\u2019s plan to minimise coal-powered energy use and in turn take responsibility for our part in achieving necessary global emission reductions,\u201d the Mayor said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mayor Wellington has previously referred to the rollout as an environmental win as well as an economic one.<\/p>\n<p>Among Council&#8217;s other emissions reduction efforts are switching to LED&#8217;s, the use of hybrid vehicles and working towards generating electricity from captured landfill gas. Council says that landfill is by far its major source of emissions.<\/p>\n<h2>Noosa Shire A PV Powerhouse<\/h2>\n<p>Like many households in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installers\/sunshinecoast\/\">Sunshine Coast<\/a> region, residents of Noosa Shire (population 52,149 &#8211; 2016 Census) have powered ahead with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">installing solar panels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/pv-map.apvi.org.au\/historical\">APVI&#8217;s solar map<\/a> estimates 37.2% of dwellings in the region have PV-enabled rooftops. 8,903 systems were installed as at September 2018, with a collective capacity of 33.8MW. Based on 2016 population stats, this would work out to around 650 watts of small-scale solar capacity installed per person.
