One tank would be a &#8220;cold&#8221; tank containing silicon heated to almost 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (~1,900 Celsius). This tank would be connected to a &#8220;hot&#8221; tank via tubes exposed to heating elements, raising the temperature to around 4,300F (~2,370 Celsius).<\/p>\n<p>When electricity is needed, the silicon is pumped through an array of tubes that emit light. This light is then converted to electricity via specialised solar cells<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/silicon-energy-storage-mb0857\/#en-26440-1' id='enref-26440-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26440)'>1<\/a><\/sup>. The somewhat cooled silicon would then be pumped back into the &#8220;cold&#8221; tank, ready to repeat the cycle.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOne of the affectionate names people have started calling our concept, is &#8216;sun in a box&#8217;, which was coined by my colleague Shannon Yee at Georgia Tech,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2018\/liquid-silicon-store-renewable-energy-1206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> says<\/a> Associate Professor Asegun Henry from MIT&#8217;s Department of Mechanical Engineering.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As you can imagine, the pump required to perform this work would have to be incredibly robust. It seems that challenge has been sorted, with the MIT team having already developed such a device that has the highest heat tolerance on record.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers estimate the TEGS-MPV system would cost about half as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/pumped-hydro-storage-australia-mb0218\/\"> pumped hydro storage<\/a> and a single system could enable a small city of around 100,000 households to be powered entirely by renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlepdf\/2019\/ee\/c8ee02341g?page=search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In-depth details<\/a> of the team&#8217;s research have been published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science.<\/p>\n<h2>Molten Silicon Energy Storage &#8211; Australia&#8217;s Already There<\/h2>\n<p>The use of molten silicon for energy storage isn&#8217;t new &#8211; Australia&#8217;s 1414 degrees has been tinkering with the technology for some time. The South Australian company recently <a href=\"https:\/\/1414degrees.com.au\/commendation-in-the-premiers-awards\/\">received a commendation<\/a> in the 2018 Premier Awards for its SA Water GAS-TESS project, part of SA Water&#8217;s goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/floating-solar-adelaide-mb0383\/\">achieving $0 net electricity costs by 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1414-degrees-silicon.jpg\" alt=\"1414 Degrees\" width=\"635\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1414-degrees-silicon.jpg 635w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1414-degrees-silicon-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The GAS-TESS system, which is currently being constructed at Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant, will burn biogas sourced from sewage treatment processes to melt silicon; with the stored energy later recovered as electricity.
