Err, unfortunately no.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gwm-global.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Wall Motors<\/a> has has released the electric ORA R1 passenger car in China.\u00a0 Or at least I think they have.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t be certain because the Great Wall Motors website has no information about it in any of my favorite languages.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-1' id='enref-26796-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>1<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 Fortunately, they put out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/chinese-carmaker-great-wall-motors-new-energy-vehicle-brand-ora-launches-new-flagship-ev-model-r1-300770886.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> so I can be certain it&#8217;s not a hoax by a bored graphics designer.\u00a0 But even if it was a hoax there are now so many articles on the internet about it that enough belief has probably been generated to will the EV into existence like an electric vehicle version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CRl0cn0Dzdo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Leonardo Dicaprio&#8217;s acting talent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By poking around on the internet I was able to discover the EV was developed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goauto.com.au\/news\/great-wall\/bmw-great-wall-team-up\/2018-07-11\/74069.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint venture with BMW<\/a> .\u00a0 But it seems most people writing about the ORA R1 have been unwilling to do even a minimal amount of poking because most of the eleventy billion<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-2' id='enref-26796-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>2<\/a><\/sup> or so articles I&#8217;ve seen on it are chock full of bullshit.\u00a0 This bullshit includes claims that&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s the cheapest electric car in the world &#8212; this is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mahindraelectric.com\/car-price-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complete bullshit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s the cheapest electric car in China &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/big-china-tiny-electric-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">absolute bullshit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Its range is 320km\u00a0 &#8212; bullshit, but bullshit that started with Great Wall Motors.<\/li>\n<li>Its cost is $12,230 to $15,910 in China &#8212; This may be the <em>price<\/em> people pay in China but because it&#8217;s heavily subsidised the total cost is much higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The vehicle will only be sold in China but BMW appears to be planning to produce something similar this year, though I&#8217;m sure their version will have a more powerful motor.\u00a0 Some technical details of the Chinese vehicle are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It has a 33 kilowatt-hour battery pack.<\/li>\n<li>When its battery pack is flat it can be &#8220;supercharged&#8221; from 0% to 80% in 40 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Its small motor can only provide 35 kilowatts of power to the wheels.<\/li>\n<li>Its top speed is around 100 km\/h<\/li>\n<li>Its real world range may be 240km.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just how much the car receives in national and local subsidies is difficult to determine but it may be about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackperkowski\/2018\/07\/13\/china-shifts-subsidies-for-electric-vehicles\/#2cf4fe105703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$14,000<\/a>.\u00a0 This makes the electric car&#8217;s total cost around $26,000 to $30,000.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a boring video that shows everything you might want to know about the car &#8212; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Apparently, it&#8217;s named after some completely unrelated wall in China.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-3' id='enref-26796-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In Australia Great Wall Motors sells petrol and diesel powered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carsguide.com.au\/car-reviews\/great-wall-steed-59473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">utes<\/a>.\u00a0 They also sell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carsguide.com.au\/car-reviews\/haval-h6-60609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">big boxy passenger cars<\/a> but they do it under the Haval brand rather than Great Wall Motors.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know why.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s to avoid upsetting Mexicans.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-4' id='enref-26796-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Their headquarters are in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baoding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baoding<\/a>, which is 140km south-west of Beijing.\u00a0 It is a god-awful place.\u00a0 Not only is the weather horrible but the pollution is so bad the air in summer is like inhaling gun powder and in the winter it&#8217;s like breathing weak acid laced with a dash of whale urine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26923\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26923\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/baodinggunpowderair.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/baodinggunpowderair.jpg 608w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/baodinggunpowderair-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Baoding pollution value at the top isn&#8217;t in decicigarettes per hour, but perhaps it should be.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With air quality like that it&#8217;s not surprising they want to build electric cars.\u00a0 The city also produces many of the wind turbine blades used in China.\u00a0 I presume this didn&#8217;t start as part of a loony plan to build giant fans to blow the smog away, but I have no evidence this isn&#8217;t actually the case.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26929\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26929\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/adelaideair.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/adelaideair.jpg 608w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/adelaideair-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s a major reason why life expectancy is six years longer in Australia than China.\u00a0 (There&#8217;s hardly any whale urine in the air at all.)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Its Range Is Not 300+ Kilometers<\/h2>\n<p>A lot of articles on the ORA R1 give its range as 200 miles but that is totally <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fake_news#\/media\/File:The_fin_de_si%C3%A8cle_newspaper_proprietor_(cropped).jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake news<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actual fake range is 194 miles or 310 kilometers.\u00a0 I describe that as fake because it uses the NEDC or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_European_Driving_Cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New European Driving Cycle<\/a>, which is similar to a game of Dungeons and Dragons because it&#8217;s a fantasy that relies heavily on randomly generated numbers.\u00a0 Car manufacturers are &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/260811509_100_tips_to_beat_the_New_European_Driving_Cycle_NEDC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to an extent<\/a> &#8212; allowed to cheat when their car&#8217;s fuel efficiency is tested and so it greatly overstates the real world range of vehicles.\u00a0 Under realistic conditions ORA R1&#8217;s range may be around 240 kilometers.\u00a0 This means it would be able to get 7.3 kilometers per kilowatt-hour from its 33 kilowatt-hour battery pack, which should be reasonable for a small electric car with a low power motor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/gofortheknees.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/gofortheknees.jpg 385w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/gofortheknees-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/gofortheknees-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/gofortheknees-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Its Top Speed Isn&#8217;t Great<\/h2>\n<p>The top speed of the ORA R1 is around 100 kilometers per hour.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ll mention the average adult in China weighs 62kg while in Australia it&#8217;s 77kg, so if I was driving it might not quite manage 100 km\/h thanks to my advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Cx8sl2uC46A?t=317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">muscularity<\/a>.\u00a0 The reason the top speed is so low is because the EV&#8217;s motor can only provide 35 kilowatts of power to the wheels.\u00a0 My Hyundai Getz<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-5' id='enref-26796-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>5<\/a><\/sup> can provide 70 kilowatts.\u00a0 Around town a 35 kilowatt electric motor gives much better performance than a 35 kilowatt internal combustion engine, but the low power still limits highway speeds.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know how well the ORA R1 will perform around town but with such a small motor it will definitely be less nippy than most electric cars.<\/p>\n<h2>Its Cost Is Still High<\/h2>\n<p>The ORA R1 is definitely not the cheapest electric car in the world.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not even close to being the cheapest electric car in China.\u00a0 The internet tells me there are all sorts of weird and wonderful Chinese electric vehicles available at a <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/big-china-tiny-electric-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lower price<\/a>.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s the cheapest in a particular category, or the cheapest &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Xllt1jCVIWI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">real boy<\/a>&#8221; car, but I&#8217;m too lazy to learn Mandarin and find out.<\/p>\n<p>With a total cost of perhaps $26,000 to $30,000 once subsidies are included, it&#8217;s not cheap compared to a similar sized conventional new car in China which can be around $10,000.\u00a0 But thanks to the subsidies Chinese citizens pay less than $16,000 for the ORA R1 and with it&#8217;s low maintenance and fuel costs<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-6' id='enref-26796-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>6<\/a><\/sup> it should make a good buy for anyone who drives a reasonably high number of kilometers per year.\u00a0 Great Wall Motors says the &#8220;core components&#8221; have a warranty of 8 years.\u00a0 If that includes the battery pack it should last long enough for the car to be a worthwhile purchase for many drivers.<\/p>\n<h2>China Leads The World In Electric Car Production<\/h2>\n<p>China is going into electric car production in a large way.\u00a0 Roughly half the electric cars in the world are made in China for use in China.\u00a0 One reason for this rapidly increasing EV output is they want to be able to breath and another reason is the Chinese economy is very vulnerable to disruptions in oil supply and they&#8217;d prefer to be less vulnerable.\u00a0 The Chinese Communist Party<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ora-r1-electric-car\/#en-26796-7' id='enref-26796-7' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(26796)'>7<\/a><\/sup> is probably concerned Trump will try to build a wall across the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sino-Myanmar_pipelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Myanmar oil pipeline<\/a>.\u00a0 They&#8217;re also aware that, as the world&#8217;s largest oil importer, their increasing consumption &#8212;
