This represented 27% of the number and 12% of the surface area of man-made water bodies in the contiguous United States.<\/p>\n<p>If a quarter of the surface area of these suitable water bodies were covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a>, collectively the floatovoltaic systems could produce the equivalent of almost 10% of current national electricity generation &#8211; and that&#8217;s a conservative estimate.<\/p>\n<p>NREL points out that many of these suitable reservoirs and dams were in areas with high land acquisition costs and electricity prices, making floating solar an even better fit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We\u2019re expecting it to take off in the United States, especially in areas that are land-constrained and where there\u2019s a major conflict between solar encroaching on farmland,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/news\/press\/2018\/nrel-details-great-potential-for-floating-pv-systems.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Jordan Macknick, lead energy-water-land analyst for NREL.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Exploring Floatovoltaics: How Floating Solar PV Could Influence Our Changing Energy Landscape\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xvCR2b0HeBE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>As well as electricity generation, floating solar offers some additional benefits, such as inhibiting the growth of algae and reducing evaporation.<\/p>\n<p>The NREL team&#8217;s research has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/acs.est.8b04735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in the journal Environmental Science &amp; Technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Floating Solar In Australia<\/h2>\n<p>Floatovoltaics haven&#8217;t had a huge impact in Australia, but a few significant projects have popped up about the place.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s first floating solar farm went into operation in 2015 at a wastewater treatment facility in Jamestown, in South Australia&#8217;s Mid-North. Elsewhere in the state, SA Water is constructing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/floating-solar-adelaide-mb0383\/\">100kW floating PV system<\/a> at its Happy Valley Reservoir in Adelaide&#8217;s southern suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/power-partners-solar-mb0438\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">99kW floating solar panel array<\/a> in Lismore, NSW was completed in January last year.<\/p>\n<p>In April last year, NSW Energy and Utilities Minister Don Harwin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/nsw-floating-solar-mb0554\/\">said<\/a> the State Government wanted to see private sector investment in renewable energy projects utilising New South Wales&#8217; dams and other water infrastructure &#8211; but we haven&#8217;t heard much more on that.<\/p>\n<p>According to NREL, there are currently only around a hundred floating solar projects operational worldwide. The largest I&#8217;m aware of is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/floating-solar-power-project-mb0045\/\">40MW floatovoltaic project<\/a> constructed in Huainan, China, which was built on an area that had been inundated due to the impacts of coal mining. Once again, an example of solar energy making use of or cleaning up the mess coal leaves behind.<\/p>\n<p>A significant project about to start construction is in Singapore, where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/floating-solar-singapore-mb0821\/\">5MW floating PV array<\/a> will be constructed in Johore Strait.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently published research from the USA&#8217;s National Renewable Energy Laboratory indicates &#8220;floatovoltaics&#8221;
