An interesting aspect is \nsome of these batteries still carry charge. Shredding lithium batteries is \naccompanied by a risk of combustion occurring, but obviously that threat has \nbeen overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the Stage 1 equipment looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/battery-recycling-feed-1024x383.jpg\" alt=\"lithium ion battery recycling feed preparation\" class=\"wp-image-27954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/battery-recycling-feed-1024x383.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/battery-recycling-feed-300x112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/battery-recycling-feed-768x288.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/battery-recycling-feed.jpg 1389w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of commissioning of Stage 1, two tonnes of battery cells have gone \nthrough the shredder. From there, what&#8217;s left of the batteries will be screened, \nwith plastic and steel casing components removed; both of which will head to \nrecycling. What will be left is &#8220;black powder&#8221;, which is comprised of cobalt, nickel and lithium compounds \nalong with shredded copper and aluminium foil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The black powder will then be processed in Stage 2 &#8211; hydrometallurgy recovery and refining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neometals says it has developed a process flowsheet that will result in more than 90% of all battery \nmaterials recovered and from all types of lithium-ion batteries; includes cells used in electric \nvehicles (EV) and solar energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;With ever increasing volumes of commercial LIBs reaching their end of life, we are focussed on proving at scale, then qualifying our scaleable and modular recycling solution with industry as early as possible,&#8221; \n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neometals.com.au\/reports\/854-Neometals-Commences-Lithium-Battery-Recycling-Pilot-Plant.pdf\"> said<\/a> Neometals Managing Director Chris Reed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>SGS Canada Inc. has been engaged by the company to undertake both the front-end feed preparation and hydrometallurgical processing\/refining stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scoping study from 2017 put the estimated operating cost at US$4.45\/lb contained Cobalt vs LME Spot\/3 month\/15 month \nprices of ~US$24.50\/lb at that time. Cobalt did get as high as around $42 last year, but has \ndropped dramatically &#8211; currently it&#8217;s sitting at around \nUS$13.60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Canada?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The big question some Australians may be asking: why is the pilot plant in \nCanada and not in Neometals&#8217; home country of Australia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/energy\/aussie-company-neometals-is-building-a-battery-recycling-plant-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview \nwith StockHead<\/a>, Mr. Reed said the pilot plant is a showcase for potential \npartners \u2014 and Australia isn\u2019t really a target market for NeoMetals. The \ncompany&#8217;s target markets are US, Europe and (obviously other parts of) Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Mr. Reed acknowledged &#8220;anything that the Canadians can do, we \ncan do down here as good, if not better&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So perhaps it&#8217;s time we did. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev\/solar-electric-cars\/\">electric \ncars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">solar \nbatteries<\/a> still aren&#8217;t all that common in Australia, it may not be long \nbefore both are. Unlike (good quality) solar panels, solar batteries won&#8217;t have \na service life anywhere near as long and it will take some time to ramp up the \nrequired recycling infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a related note, we&#8217;ve mentioned a few times over the past eighteen months  not much seemed to be happening in Australia on the solar panel recycling front.  Australia&#8217;s only venture, Reclaim PV, had been very quiet. However, last month the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine-australia.com\/2019\/01\/18\/australias-first-solar-panel-recycler-plans-to-help-green-the-full-life-cycle-of-components\/\">reportedly  stated<\/a> it will open Australia\u2019s first commercial solar-panel recycling  plant in mid 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia&#8217;s Neometals Ltd has announced the successful commissioning of stage 1 of its lithium\u2010ion battery recycling pilot plant &#8211;
