As well as new projects, it is considering those seeking to extend the lives of existing coal-fired clunkers.<\/p>\n<p>Early this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/coal-new-generation-mb0924\/\">it was revealed<\/a> 66 submissions were received for the program, with ten involving power station projects running entirely or mostly on coal.<\/p>\n<p>However, legal advice provided to The Australia Institute (TAI) Climate &amp; Energy Program indicates the initiative is open to a High Court Challenge without new or amended legislation. The Morrison Government has zero hope of achieving this before the May election.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is another blow to the Federal Government, that their signature program to fund electricity is destined for the shelf \u2013 along with the rest of the Government\u2019s energy policies,&#8221;\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tai.org.au\/content\/legal-advice-energy-generation-program-unconstitutional\">said<\/a> TAI&#8217;s Richie Merzian.\u00a0 \u201cAlmost every coal power station in this country was built with Government and taxpayer support and with the demise of the Government\u2019s underwriting program, we may never see another built with taxpayer dollars again.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Merzian said the only way for the program to proceed is through investing in renewables through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Coal power is now stuck between a rock and a hard place as investors have little appetite for funding coal fired electricity generation in Australia. Westpac&#8217;s head of infrastructure and utilities, David Scrivener, recently said new coal-fired generation projects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/news\/politics\/investment-is-flowing-to-renewable-not-coalfired-power-says-westpac-20190217-h1bcyz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had little hope<\/a> of proceeding without taxpayer funding involved.<\/p>\n<h2>The Answer Is Renewables Dammit<\/h2>\n<p>But there&#8217;s good news &#8211; flying in the face of what many politicians seem to believe, the cost of new renewable energy generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/coal-killed-by-renewables\/\">is less than that of new coal<\/a> &#8211; and will soon be cheaper than existing coal. This includes enough energy storage or dispatchable generation to meet demand more reliably than coal fired power generation can.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Government&#8217;s energy policy may be an utter mess, but the Clean Energy Council has its back &#8211; it has released a <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.cleanenergycouncil.org.au\/documents\/advocacy-initiatives\/submissions\/federal-election-clean-energy-recommendations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suite of policy recommendations<\/a> the Morrison Government can take to the election.
