There&#8217;s good news &#8211; thanks to renewables.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Authored by Dr. Hugh Saddler, the NEEA Electricity Updates provide data on electricity demand, supply and generation emissions in Australia&#8217;s National Electricity Market (NEM), plus demand in WA&#8217;s South West Interconnected System (SWIS).<\/p>\n<p>Just to clarify &#8211; the NEM consists of Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. The fact it&#8217;s called &#8220;national&#8221;, but doesn&#8217;t include WA or the Northern Territory has been a source of never-ending irritation for SQ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/author\/ronald\/\">Ronald<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, among the key findings in TAI&#8217;s latest report is that while there was increased demand in January and consequently emissions also increased slightly, emissions intensity continued to decrease due to the influx of renewable capacity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28317\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/electricity-emissions-intensity.png\" alt=\"electricity generation emissions intensity\" width=\"848\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/electricity-emissions-intensity.png 848w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/electricity-emissions-intensity-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/electricity-emissions-intensity-768x413.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other findings include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wind and grid scale solar power are supplying a bigger share of annual grid generation than hydro power, and this is set to continue<\/li>\n<li>South Australia is now firmly above 50% renewable electricity &#8211; SA first bypassed that figure in August last year.<\/li>\n<li>The growth of renewable energy and fall in coal-fired power generation has resulted in more than a 20% reduction in annual emissions in the NEM compared to its highest level in the year to September 2008.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report notes when estimated rooftop solar is included, renewables generation reached 21.0% of all generation in the NEM in January, and all non-hydro renewables reached 12.6%.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/renewables-share-generation.png\" alt=\"Renewables' share of energy generation\" width=\"882\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/renewables-share-generation.png 882w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/renewables-share-generation-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/renewables-share-generation-768x436.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Coal Fails, Solar Saves<\/h2>\n<p>Also covered in the report was the impact of January&#8217;s heatwaves, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/heatwave-coal-solar\/\">coal failed while solar power soldiered on<\/a>. It was the absence of approximately 1,300 MW of brown coal generation through plant failures and rather poorly-timed maintenance that resulted in some load shedding in Victoria. And things could have been a lot worse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If we take one lesson from the record breaking heatwaves this summer, it is that solar saved the day,&#8221; said Dr. Saddler<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Saddler also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tai.org.au\/content\/renewables-outperformed-coal-summer-unprecedented-heatwaves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commented<\/a> that the growth of solar power and wind energy within the NEM will do far more to reduce emissions than the Morrison Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/morrison-climate-solutions-mb0952\/\">Climate Solutions Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The full TAI report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tai.org.au\/sites\/default\/files\/NEEA%20Electricity%20Update%20Feb%202019%20[WEB]_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be downloaded here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TAI hasn&#8217;t been a huge fan of Morrison Government policies relating to energy and climate change. Recently it said that based on legal advice TAI had received, Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/electricity-taylor-constitution-mb0944\/\">lacks constitutional authority<\/a> over electricity and authority to fund projects under the Morrison Government&#8217;s Underwriting New Generation Investment Program.
