It wasn&#8217;t an easy task.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Situated in the Walpole Region of Western Australia, Mount Frankland is big lump of granite topping out at 411 metres <sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/mount-frankland-solar-mb0965\/#en-28491-1' id='enref-28491-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(28491)'>1<\/a><\/sup>. It&#8217;s one of the highest points in Western Power&#8217;s telecommunications network and there&#8217;s no vehicle access to the summit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/mount-frankland.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/mount-frankland.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/mount-frankland-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/mount-frankland-768x497.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two lucky Western Power telecommunications technicians and two riggers were appointed the task of hoofing it to the summit to dismantle the existing equipment and install the new solar panels and batteries. Western Power used the term &#8220;to scale the summit&#8221;, which makes the ascent sound quite dramatic, but it turns out there&#8217;s a short (but steep) sealed path that runs halfway to the top &#8211; and then stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, thankfully the workers weren&#8217;t also made to carry the gear, which weighed more than 300 kilograms. That was loaded into a cargo net and transported to the site via helicopter, which also picked up the old equipment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Solar-power summit gets an upgrade\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nw1YWxOd8Eo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>While the exercise wasn&#8217;t exactly a walk in the park<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/mount-frankland-solar-mb0965\/#en-28491-2' id='enref-28491-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(28491)'>2<\/a><\/sup>, it wasn&#8217;t quite as manually intensive as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/rec-solar-villages-mb0878\/\">project in the Himalayas<\/a> where batteries and panels were carried by villagers and pack animals over a period of days.<\/p>\n<p>With any luck, it should be another 20 years at least before the solar panels need replacing again. Most solar panels these days are accompanied by a 25-year performance warranty<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/mount-frankland-solar-mb0965\/#en-28491-3' id='enref-28491-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(28491)'>3<\/a><\/sup>. Sorry, no specs <a href=\"https:\/\/westernpower.com.au\/community\/news-opinion\/solar-powered-summit-gets-an-upgrade-for-critical-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were provided<\/a> on the old or new system.<\/p>\n<p>Solar power has had a long association with telecommunications in Australia. It was way back in 1974 that Telecom Australia (now as known Telstra) began using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a> to power remote area telecommunications.<\/p>\n<p>In other solar news relating to Western Power, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitynews.com.au\/wanneroo-times\/news\/western-power-trials-solar-street-lights-in-madeley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wanneroo Times<\/a> reports the company is trialing solar street lights in the Perth suburb of Madeley while it undertakes repairs to cables in the street.
