{"id":28639,"date":"2019-03-12T06:37:29","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T20:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=28639"},"modified":"2024-04-12T09:44:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T00:14:20","slug":"solar-grants-nt-councils-mb0971","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-grants-nt-councils-mb0971\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Cash For Northern Territory Councils"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_28640\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28640\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/solar-power-nt-1024x585.jpg\" alt=\"energy efficiency and sustainability grant - NT\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/solar-power-nt-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/solar-power-nt-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/solar-power-nt-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/solar-power-nt.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/photos\/photovoltaic-solar-module-sun-4022528\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">samfabersf<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Northern Territory Government has announced a $2 million energy efficiency and sustainability grant funding pool for local government councils.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Aside from solar power systems, councils will be able to apply for funding for a range of items under the program, including (but not limited to):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Window glazing<\/li>\n<li>Other renewable energy systems including solar hot water<\/li>\n<li>Energy storage<\/li>\n<li>Lighting Upgrades \u2013 LEDs, controls, timers, sensors, solar powered<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev-chargers\/public\">Electric vehicle charging stations<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Solar powered bores and water storage<\/li>\n<li>Pool covers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis investment will encourage councils to move to better energy efficient infrastructure and products and will also help to reduce costs to consumers and taxpayers,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.nt.gov.au\/mediaRelease\/28768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Gerry McCarthy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The $2 million is a substantial amount of money given the Territory&#8217;s population is only around 229,000 and there&#8217;s just 17 local government areas.<\/p>\n<p>While solar power systems tend to be more expensive to install in the NT given the tyranny of distance, between the grant and Australia&#8217;s major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/rebate\/\">solar subsidy<\/a> also available to Councils, a significant amount of solar could be installed.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a 99kW <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/commercial-solar-guide.html\">commercial solar<\/a> power system installed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installers\/darwin\/\">Darwin<\/a> this year is eligible for 1,824 Small-scale Technology Certificates, which form the basis of the subsidy. At a current value of $37.50 each, this represents a system cost reduction of around $68,400. Councils could get great bang for their grant bucks by choosing to undertake PV projects.<\/p>\n<p>The Territory Labor Government&#8217;s initiative is part of its Roadmap to Renewables agenda that envisions 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030, with solar power recommended as a centrepiece technology.<\/p>\n<p>Released in 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/nt-renewables-roadmap-mb0329\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roadmap to Renewables report<\/a> stated the amount of land needed for solar and storage to achieve 50% renewables would be around 700 hectares; a small fraction of the NT\u2019s 1,346,200 square kilometres. But it doesn&#8217;t have to just be huge solar farms. Panels installed on the rooftops of the Territory&#8217;s buildings &#8211; including those owned by councils &#8211; can play an important role.<\/p>\n<p>Further information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/dlghcd.nt.gov.au\/our-services\/local-government2\/local-government-funding\/energy-efficiency-and-sustainability-grant-2018-19\">energy efficiency and sustainability grant funding<\/a> can be found here. This is a one-off program and applications close Friday 5 April 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Among councils in the Northern Territory to already embrace solar is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alicesprings.nt.gov.au\/council\/solar-energy-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alice Springs Town Council<\/a>, which has installed 575kW of PV capacity to date.
