Some innovation from the traditional energy industry.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the recent kerfuffle about the Approved Solar Retailer scheme, I had an epiphany.<\/p>\n<p>It dawned on me that the &#8216;new energy&#8217; media landscape in Australia has become a victim of the &#8216;filter bubble&#8217; culture &#8211; and is, in 2019, horribly lopsided. To be specific, scrolling through the news feeds there is very little coverage of what the other side of the energy industry are up to. Rather narcissistically the &#8216;Clean Energy&#8217; industry only ever publish news about low emissions technology, blatantly ignoring any innovation from &#8216;the other side&#8217;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Well, today at the SolarQuotes blog is a very special day. Today we will start to fearlessly and without favour shine a light on innovations from the traditional energy industry, alongside our usual renewable coverage.<\/p>\n<p>To kick off this new, unbiased era, I want to promote a scheme announced by the Minerals Council last week. Whilst many reading this might disagree with its intent, I don&#8217;t think anyone can argue that it isn&#8217;t innovative way to get bills down for people willing to partake. Personally I applaud lateral thinking where ever I see it.<\/p>\n<h2>Introducing BrownPower<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/59K2kF6o9Tk?t=47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BrownPower<\/a> is a joint initiative of the Federal Government and Australian mining industries to provide an accreditation program for fossil fuel energy.<\/p>\n<p>When a consumer chooses to buy a BrownPower product from an energy retailer, a discount will be applied to their electricity bill that comes from money that would otherwise be spent on green energy.\u00a0 The scheme is designed to reward consumers for choosing reliable energy over intermittent and unreliable renewables.<\/p>\n<p>The new scheme will be complimentary to the development of renewable energy because it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facilitates construction of new fossil fuel generators across Australia.<\/li>\n<li>Encourages growth in consumer demand for reliable fossil fuel energy, which provides the grid stability renewables rely upon.<\/li>\n<li>Smooths the decline in greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation to levels that are consistent with health and safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Does BrownPower Work?<\/h2>\n<p>By purchasing BrownPower, households and businesses commit their BrownPower providers to purchasing the equivalent amount of electricity from accredited fossil fuel energy generators, which generate electricity from natural geological sources such as coal, natural gas, oil, tar, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peat<\/a><sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/brownpower-coal-industry\/#en-28719-1' id='enref-28719-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(28719)'>1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>By purchasing BrownPower, customers are helping support the fossil fuel energy sector in Australia over and above the support provided through the Wholesale Electricity Market.\u00a0 \u200b<\/p>\n<h2>How Much Will BrownPower Save?<\/h2>\n<p>BrownPower costs less than standard electricity because it is mostly generated from older existing infrastructure that has been servicing the grid for many decades.\u00a0 As more old fossil fuel generating capacity becomes fully paid off, the lower costs will become.\u00a0 The longer these fossil fuel generators stay in service the greater the savings will be.<\/p>\n<p>By participating in a BrownPower scheme households generate Fossil Fuel Underwriting Certificates.\u00a0 They can keep these certificates for themselves, but if they give them to their electricity retailer they will be guaranteed the best possible price.\u00a0 At the moment the price of Fossil Fuel Underwriting Certificates, or FFUCSs, is set the same as renewable Large-scale Generation Certificates or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demandmanager.com.au\/certificate-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LGCs<\/a>.\u00a0 Currently, for every FFUC they give, households will save $35 on their electricity bills.<\/p>\n<p>Each FFUC represents burning one gigajoule of fossil fuel, which generates approximately 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity &#8211; so participating in a 100% BrownPower scheme will lower electricity bills by around 3.5 cents per kilowatt-hour.\u00a0 If a household gives the maximum amount of FFUCs possible it will lower their electricity bills by 10-15%.<\/p>\n<h2>BrownPower Funding<\/h2>\n<p>The funding from the BrownPower scheme will come from the sale of LGCs.\u00a0 This revenue previously would have gone to large-scale solar power and wind farms based upon how many megawatt-hours of renewable electricity they produced, but according to Australia&#8217;s Minister for Energy, Angus Taylor, at the BrownPower launch on Friday:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Renewables have been subsidized in this country for 18 years now.\u00a0 That&#8217;s enough time to go from infancy to voting age.\u00a0 Australia is the land of the fair go, but the other side of that is you also have to do your fair share.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s time for renewables to do their fair share and pull their weight without subsidies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Young people like renewable energy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a young technology.\u00a0 And in this country we&#8217;ve always had the tradition that the young do their bit to help support the elderly.\u00a0 Coal generation in Australia is over 100 years old.\u00a0 Many of the nation&#8217;s highly reliable coal power plants are over 40 years old.\u00a0 Renewable energy has the advantages of youth, massive quantities of overseas research, and huge amounts of investment.\u00a0 It is blatantly unfair for renewable energy not to share some of the burden of maintaining Australia&#8217;s fleet of reliable fossil fuel generators.\u00a0 For this reason we are proud to announce that the Coalition&#8217;s Reliability Levy<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/brownpower-coal-industry\/#en-28719-2' id='enref-28719-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(28719)'>2<\/a><\/sup> on renewable energy shall finally achieve equality in the Australian electricity sector.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_29165\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29165\" class=\"wp-image-29165 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/angustaylorsheep.jpg\" alt=\"Energy Minister Angus Taylor\" width=\"800\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/angustaylorsheep.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/angustaylorsheep-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/angustaylorsheep-768x434.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Minister for Energy, Angus Taylor, preparing for the Federal election. (Image: Goulburn Post)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>A Reasonable Approach To Climate Change<\/h2>\n<p>The Minister denied the BrownPower scheme would subsidize greenhouse gas emissions and reiterated it was based on energy produced from burning fossil fuels and not carbon dioxide released.\u00a0 When pressed on the dangers of climate change the Minister said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There is a strong scientific consensus in favour of the existence of biological evolution.\u00a0 Darwin first proposed it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_the_Origin_of_Species\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Origin of Species<\/a> 160 years ago.\u00a0 For longer than that time humans have been contributing significant amounts to the natural release of carbon dioxide.\u00a0 For over 200 years now.\u00a0 This has been more than enough time for humans to have become adapted to ever increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.\u00a0 While the Morrison Government fully agrees on the need to act on climate change, the only safe and prudent course of action is to slowly reduce emissions over a period of hundreds of years to allow humans to gradually adapt back to lower levels of carbon dioxide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not allow ecoterrorists driven by an ideological agenda to endanger our lives and those of our children by recklessly engaging in an unsafe rush to lower carbon dioxide levels and we will put in place the proper incentives to prevent this.\u00a0 Otherwise, who knows what mutations could result?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>A Collaborative Effort<\/h2>\n<p>BrownPower was developed by the Morrison Government engaging in a collaborative process with industry bodies that included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Queensland United Electrical Energy Forum<\/li>\n<li>Fossil Alliance Against Renewable Targets and Subsidies<\/li>\n<li>Coal Renewal Association Partners<\/li>\n<li>Save Historical Ignition Technology<\/li>\n<li>World Association for No Kilowatt Emission Reductions<\/li>\n<li>Support Combustive Recycling Of Tertiary Underground Minerals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>BrownPower Around The World<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to being introduced Australia-wide, the Morrison Government is currently in talks with Poland, Russia, and the US Trump Administration on the international adoption of BrownPower certificates.\u00a0 The Energy Minister said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are currently at work creating a international partnership that will allow BrownPower certificates to be internationally traded, initially between four countries, but our ultimate goal is to FFUC the world.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the recent kerfuffle about the Approved Solar Retailer scheme, I had an epiphany.
