The system is expected to generate equivalent to 10% of the station&#8217;s annual electricity requirements, reducing its dependence on diesel generators and the emissions that accompany diesel-based energy generation. Diesel would also be a pretty pricey item to ship all the way to Antarctica, not to mention the threat posed by spills to the (relatively) pristine environment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Solar Panels at Casey\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9zm_Ov-E_Os?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The biting cold and wind proved a challenge during the installation, particularly when working with small items such as brackets and bolts, and fixing the panels to the wall.<\/p>\n<p>So why aren&#8217;t the panels on the rooftop?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"content-close\">&#8220;Back in the real world the sun typically goes overhead,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antarctica.gov.au\/news\/2019\/first-australian-solar-farm-in-antarctica-opens-at-casey-research-station\">said<\/a> infrastructure engineer Mark Pekin. &#8220;Down here at the very low latitudes in the southern hemisphere, the sun typically doesn\u2019t get much above the horizon, so the wall of the building gets more sunshine than the roof of the building.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span id=\"content-close\">The project has been a collaborative effort between <\/span>Australian Antarctic Division and Masdar.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt will test the durability and suitability of the solar panels to the strong wind and snow load in Antarctica and help us to determine if it is an efficient way of powering a station,&#8221; said Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/aleo-solar-review.html\">Aleo Solar<\/a> panels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/fronius-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fronius\u00a0 inverters<\/a> have been used for the system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28872\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fronius-inverters-antarctica.jpg\" alt=\"Fronius solar inverters Antarctica\" width=\"800\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fronius-inverters-antarctica.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fronius-inverters-antarctica-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fronius-inverters-antarctica-768x462.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Not The First Use Of Solar Power<\/h2>\n<p>While this may be the first installation of its type for Australia in the Antarctic, <span id=\"content-close\">solar power has been in use by the Australian Antarctic Division for nearly two decades, albeit in much smaller systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"content-close\">Up to this point, solar had mainly been used for powering VHF radio repeaters, remote radio installations, automatic weather stations and in remote area power supplies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.antarctica.gov.au\/living-and-working\/station-life-and-activities\/renewable-energy\/solar-power\/technical-notes\">RAPS<\/a>). In the case of the latter, the first RAPS were installed during the 2000-01 summer at Bauer Bay and Green Gorge, followed by systems at Brothers Point, Hurd Point and Waterfall Bay field huts in 2001-02. The batteries in these systems can be charged using petrol, solar and wind power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span id=\"content-close\">Trivia: Casey, Davis and Mawson Stations all have a postcode &#8211; it&#8217;s 7151;
