Tilting windmills is a bad idea.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Best Tilt Angle Is Not Equal To Latitude<\/h2>\n<p>The further from the equator a place is, the higher its latitude.\u00a0 Darwin is pretty close to the global waistline, so its latitude is only 12\u00ba while Hobart is almost halfway to the south pole and has a latitude of 43\u00ba.<\/p>\n<p>Solar panels tilted at an angle equal to the latitude will face exactly midway between the sun&#8217;s highest point in the sky in summer and its lowest point in winter.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panels-tilt-angle\/#en-29626-2' id='enref-29626-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(29626)'>2<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 This seems like a reasonable way to maximise solar electricity output, but because days are longer in summer it usually helps to tilt them a few degrees lower to take advantage of this.\u00a0 Seasonal differences in average cloud cover can also alter the optimal angle.<\/p>\n<h2>Optimal Solar Panel Tilts For Capitals<\/h2>\n<p>I have used the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvwatts.nrel.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PVWatts<\/a> site to determine the optimal tilt for north facing solar panels in each capital for maximum annual output.\u00a0 While there is a small risk the PVWatts figures are off, I trust them to be accurate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adelaide &#8212; latitude 35\u00ba : Optimal tilt 29\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Brisbane &#8212; latitude 27\u00ba : Optimal tilt 24\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Canberra &#8212; latitude 35\u00ba : Optimal tilt 30\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Darwin &#8212; latitude 12\u00ba : Optimal tilt 18\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Hobart &#8212; latitude 43\u00ba : Optimal tilt 37\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Melbourne &#8212; latitude 38\u00ba : Optimal tilt 32\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Perth &#8212; latitude 32\u00ba : Optimal tilt 28\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Sydney &#8212; latitude 34\u00ba : Optimal tilt 31\u00ba<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29754 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/adelaide-tilt.jpeg\" alt=\"Best solar panel tilt angle - (Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Harvest-More-Sun-Power-Stand-for-Tiny-Solar-Panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Aeschlimann<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Optimal Orientation Plus Optimal Tilt<\/h2>\n<p>Two weeks ago I wrote an article about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/best-solar-panel-direction\/\">best direction &#8212; or orientation &#8212; to face solar panels<\/a> for maximum annual output in each Australian capital city.\u00a0 Using these orientations has little or no effect on the optimal tilt.\u00a0 It will increase it by 1 degree in Adelaide and Hobart and 2 degrees in Darwin, with no change in other capitals.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve listed the optimal panel orientation (clockwise from north) and optimal tilt for each capital below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adelaide:\u00a0 Orientation 6\u00ba, Tilt 30\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Brisbane:\u00a0 Orientation 357\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 24\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Canberra:\u00a0 Orientation 356\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 30\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Darwin:\u00a0 Orientation 30\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 20\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Hobart:\u00a0 Orientation 20\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 38\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Melbourne:\u00a0 Orientation 8\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 32\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Perth:\u00a0 Orientation 20\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 28\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Sydney:\u00a0 Orientation 12\u00ba,\u00a0 Tilt 31\u00ba<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Bifacial Panels And Tilt Frames<\/h2>\n<p>While they can maximise the energy yield of solar panels, generally the extra expense of tilt frames &#8212; both the cost of the hardware and the extra labour required for installation &#8212; means they&#8217;re usually not considered worthwhile for rooftop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power<\/a>.\u00a0 But one advantage is they allow the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/double-glass-glass-glass-bifacial-panels-hell\/\">bifacial solar panels<\/a>.\u00a0 These are double layers of glass that allow solar cells in the middle to use light from either direction, generating extra energy depending on how reflective the surface below them is, as this &#8212; hopefully accurate &#8212; image from LG Solar shows (the numbers show &#8216;extra energy&#8217; compared to a non-bifacial panel):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29738 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lgbifacialsurfaces.jpg\" alt=\"Bifacial solar panel performance\" width=\"1481\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lgbifacialsurfaces.jpg 1481w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lgbifacialsurfaces-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lgbifacialsurfaces-768x350.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lgbifacialsurfaces-1024x467.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1481px) 100vw, 1481px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As bifacial panels are coming down in price we may see a small renaissance in tilt frames. \u00a0As batteries increase in popularity and homes and cars transition to become all-electric, people will want to generate more and more solar electricity locally.
