The start of winter is usually a quieter time for Australia’s solar industry, but there were still plenty of Aussie households interested in busting their electricity bills with solar panels during June.<\/p>\n

System Size Selections<\/h2>\n

Bigger remains better in the minds of prospective Australian solar buyers and it’s a wise choice in terms of bang for buck. 6kW<\/a> and larger solar power systems represented close to 67% of\u00a0 preferences among those who selected a size, a slight drop from May’s 68%. 16% were after a 5kW system – a big decrease compared to June last year when the figure was 37%. Approximately 32% of all submissions asked for advice on system sizing<\/a>, down on May (~33%), but still up on April (31%).<\/p>\n

\"Solar<\/p>\n

Intended Purchase Timeframe<\/h2>\n

The proportion of solar energy shoppers wanting to purchase a system immediately popped back up in June, rising to 19% (~16% in May, 18% in April). Those wanting to buy anytime from right now to within 3 months also increased significantly, up from 80% in May to close to 85% in June.<\/p>\n

\"Solar<\/p>\n

Price And Quality<\/h2>\n

12% had a preference for a top quality (most expensive) system in June, down on May and April’s ~13%.\u00a0 Those wanting details of a system offering a balance of quality and price stayed just under 80% and the proportion interested in a \u201cgood budget solar package<\/a>\u201d crept up to close to 8% (7% in May).<\/p>\n

\"Solar<\/p>\n

System Monitoring Option<\/h2>\n

One of the questions we ask on our quote form is \u201cWould you like consumption monitoring?\u201d Learn more about solar monitoring systems<\/a> – and why they are an option well worth considering. In June, 64% selected yes – down on May’s 67% and April’s 65%.<\/p>\n

\"Solar<\/p>\n

Solar Battery Readiness<\/h2>\n

Interest in \u201cbattery-ready\u201d solar power systems dropped in June to 24% compared to May’s 26% and 27% in both April and March. We use responses to this question to assist prospective installers with system design.<\/p>\n

\"Battery<\/p>\n

Concurrent Solar + Battery Installation<\/h2>\n

7% indicated interest in having a battery installed concurrently with their solar power system, down on May (8%) and the same as April. On a related note, a battery segment on Channel 7’s Sunrise<\/a> last week raised the ire of the SQ team.<\/p>\n

\"PV<\/p>\n

Battery Capacity Choice<\/h2>\n

For those who were interested in a concurrent battery installation and had specified capacity, approximately 19% indicated a 1-5kWh system in June (20% in May, 21% in April), 43% a 5-10kWh battery (45% May, 43% in April) and 38% a 10kWh+ battery (35% in May and April). Uncertainty on capacity remains very common, with 55% wanting advice on energy storage sizing in June.<\/p>\n

\"Battery<\/p>\n

Battery Use Intention<\/h2>\n

Under 3% wanted a solar battery<\/a> for backup as the primary use \u2013 down a little from May (3%) and much less than April (6%). 45% were wanting a battery for minimising grid electricity consumption (May 48% ), while 52% wanted it for both applications (49% in May, 47% in April).<\/p>\n

\"Intended<\/p>\n

Electricity Costs<\/h2>\n

In June, around 45% of Australians using the SolarQuotes service who knew how much their electricity bills are said they were paying $500 – $1,000 a quarter (50% in May\/April) and just over 11% were paying $1,000 or more. (13% May, 11% April).<\/p>\n

41% said they had bills of less than $500 a quarter, whereas in May that figure was significantly lower – 35%. Perhaps people are thinking about their last quarter’s bill (coming out of the warmer months in this case) rather than an average over a year.<\/p>\n
