The nature of the licence means a \u201cnet environmental benefit\u201d must be achieved for the facility\u2019s surrounding catchment.<\/p>\n<p>Among the facility&#8217;s green credentials:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The production of\u00a0 very low nutrient effluent through the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Membrane_bioreactor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">membrane bioreactor technology<\/a> and the construction of wetlands that will further filter the effluent. This will achieve a total nitrogen release of 1mg\/litre and total phosphorous release of 0.5mg\/litre.<\/li>\n<li>Rehabilitation and replanting the upstream banks of Logan River to reduce nutrient-rich sediment from entering the waterway.<\/li>\n<li>Planting native trees on 38ha of the site, which will offset approved vegetation removal by developers across the LGA.<\/li>\n<li>An on-site solar farm to contribute energy for the facility&#8217;s operations.<\/li>\n<li>Investigations into potential reuse of effluent produced by the plant for agricultural irrigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The environmental benefit to the river and its catchment will be up to five times better than the impact of any typical wastewater treatment plant in Australia,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logan.qld.gov.au\/about-council\/news-and-publications\/media-releases\/media-releases\/cedar-grove-environmental-centre-unveiled?utm_source=miragenews&amp;utm_medium=miragenews&amp;utm_campaign=news\">says<\/a> Logan City Council.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The facility is expected to be operational by mid-2020.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the solar power aspect of\u00a0 Cedar Grove Environmental Centre, information on that was difficult to find. <a href=\"http:\/\/edqdad.dsdip.qld.gov.au\/documents\/898\/10983\/ResponsetoInformationRequest.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A document<\/a> from October 2017 notes it as being 150 kW, but no other details were provided.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/solar-panels.jpg\" alt=\"Cedar Grove Environment Centre solar energy system\" width=\"800\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/solar-panels.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/solar-panels-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/solar-panels-768x535.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Logan City Council&#8217;s Other Solar Energy Efforts<\/h2>\n<p>Logan City Council has embraced solar power as a way to cut energy costs and emissions. Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-logan-council-mb1114\/\">we reported<\/a> another five of its buildings will have solar panels installed this financial year. These will add to Council&#8217;s 29 solar power systems already in place. Among these are another water-related asset &#8211; an off-grid 87kW array at Round Mountain Reservoir, which also features a Tesla Powerpack battery system.<\/p>\n<p>Where feasible and subject to a cost\/benefit analysis, on-site renewable energy systems will be included during the construction of all new Council facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Logan City Council has <span lang=\"EN\">set a target of achieving carbon neutrality for its operations by 2022.\u00a0 To achieve this target, all unavoidable emissions are to be offset via the purchase and subsequent retirement of carbon offsets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In January last year, Logan City joined the Climate Council\u2019s Cities Power Partnership (CPP).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Construction of a wastewater treatment facility with a curious name &#8211;
