{"id":33039,"date":"2019-08-28T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2019-08-27T21:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=33039"},"modified":"2024-09-05T09:46:31","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T00:16:31","slug":"city-newcastle-renewables-mb1191","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/city-newcastle-renewables-mb1191\/","title":{"rendered":"City Of Newcastle (Council) Moving To 100% Renewables Based Electricity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/city-newcastle-solar.jpg\" alt=\"City of Newcastle - solar power\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/city-newcastle-solar.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/city-newcastle-solar-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/city-newcastle-solar-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/city-newcastle-solar-1024x538.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A plan to pursue sourcing 100 per cent of the City of Newcastle Council&#8217;s operational electricity requirements from renewables-based generation has been approved.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The City of Newcastle had already committed to sourcing 30 per cent of its electricity needs from renewables and reducing overall electricity usage by 30 per cent by 2020 &#8211; and now it has set its sights much higher.<\/p>\n<p>The nod was given at a Council meeting last night after a study commissioned by Council found millions of dollars could be saved over the next 25 years by sourcing electricity either directly or via a retailer from renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>The City&#8217;s residents also strongly support such a move, with council&#8217;s Winter Community Survey revealing 70% in favour of the City moving towards a 100 per cent renewable energy target.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s City of Newcastle\u2019s aim to be a leader in renewable energy as part of our strategy to be a global smart city,\u201d Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-sets-sights-on-100-renewable-electricity-targ\">said<\/a> prior to the vote yesterday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>City Of Newcastle&#8217;s Solar Energy Efforts<\/h2>\n<p>The City of Newcastle is already making good use of solar energy, with around half a megawatt of solar capacity operational at ten of its sites, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/Solar-Newcastle-Regional-Museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Newcastle Museum<\/a> (100kW)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Newcastle\/media\/Documents\/environment\/Energy%20and%20Resource\/Solar-PV-System-City-Works-Depot-Newcastle-(PDF).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Works Depot<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/location\/waratah-2298-nsw\/\">Waratah<\/a> (91kW)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/Wallsend-Library\">Wallsend Library<\/a> (80kW)<\/li>\n<li>No.2 Sportsground in Newcastle West (20kW)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/about-us\/news-and-updates\/projects-and-works\/no-1-sportsground-redevelopment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No.1 Sportsground<\/a> in Newcastle West (10kW)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/City-Library-Solar-Electricity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City Library<\/a> (44kW)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/New-Lambton-Library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Lambton Library<\/a> (10kW)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Newcastle\/media\/Documents\/environment\/Energy%20and%20Resource\/Solar-PV-Installation-Newcastle-Art-Gallery-2016-(PDF).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newcastle Art Gallery<\/a> (86kW)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A project not included in the half-megawatt tally is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Projects-Works\/Summerhill-solar-farm\">5MW<\/a> Summerhill Waste Management Centre PV project under construction and soon to come online, which incorporates 14,500 solar panels. All these projects combined will provide the equivalent to 50-65 per cent of supply for Council operations, meaning it&#8217;s well on track to achieving a 100% renewables goal.<\/p>\n<p>Many residents of the City of Newcastle local government area have also been benefiting from the savings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power<\/a> brings. <a href=\"https:\/\/pv-map.apvi.org.au\/historical#12\/-32.9387\/151.7181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APVI data<\/a> current as at the end of June indicates 9,711 PV installations are in place in the LGA and approximately 15.5% of dwellings have solar panels installed.<\/p>\n<p>Council&#8217;s decision is well-timed as the City\u2019s current electricity contracts are due to expire on 31 December this year, so it will be looking at entering into new long-term agreements providing 100 per cent renewable electricity supply.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Mayor Nelmes <a
