But I Thought Astro Boy Was Nuclear Powered?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33547 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astronergy.jpg\" alt=\"chint - astronergy solar panels review\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astronergy.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astronergy-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astronergy-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astronergy-1024x536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Good news, friends!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve discovered a new solar panel manufacturer site full of bizarre English!\u00a0 It is brilliant!\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t been this happy since since the days when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/risen-review.html\">Risen Energy<\/a> boasted about having a blue ocean strategy instead of a red ocean where the fish keep biting each other.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update 10:04 am 17th Sept 2019:<\/strong> Astroenergy has told me they have a 12 year product warranty on all panels sold in Australia and not the 10 years given in the warranty document I downloaded from their site.\u00a0 If you get CHINT Solar \/ Astronergy panels, I recommend checking you can get a 12 year product warranty for them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer is CHINT Solar, which makes Astronergy solar panels &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chintsolar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their site<\/a> is a beauty.\u00a0 It kept me entertained for hours.\u00a0 I talked to their representative a couple of weeks ago but only got around to checking what they have on the internet today and I&#8217;m very glad I did.<\/p>\n<p>I should probably give you some information on Astronergy, rather than just compliment them on the hilarity of the English on their website, as the number of their solar panels being installed in Australia is increasing.\u00a0 Here are some bullet points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They produce tier one panels.<\/li>\n<li>10 year product warranty on most solar panels and 12 years for double glass.<\/li>\n<li>Did well in 2018 DVNGL solar panel testing.<\/li>\n<li>Manufactured in China.\u00a0 They also produce solar cells in Thailand.<\/li>\n<li>Careful colour matching of cells avoids patchy looking panels.<\/li>\n<li>First sold in Australia 9 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Competitive pricing.<\/li>\n<li>They have an Australian Office in Adelaide under the name CHINT Solar &#8212; not Astronergy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll go over some of these points below, as well as cover what Astronergy has to do with powering Astro boy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33459\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33459\" class=\"wp-image-33459 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astroboylaser.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here we see Astro boy destroying a Dutch Mutant Tulip, as is only good and right.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But first I have to tell you about CHINT, the company that owns Astronergy.<\/p>\n<h2>Astronergy &#8212; Part Of The CHINT Group<\/h2>\n<p>CHINT is a big company &#8212; as in billions of dollars of revenue each year big.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also diversified, which means they do more than just make solar panels.\u00a0 Hopefully, this increases their odds of still being around in the future to honor their solar panel warranties.<\/p>\n<p>The company was founded in 1984 and has around 30,000 employees.\u00a0 It produces electrical equipment, including large inverters for solar farms and other applications.\u00a0 CHINT also appears to make very relaxed and laid back electric appliances, as this information from Bloomberg suggests:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33416\" style=\"width: 1168px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33416\" class=\"wp-image-33416 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chintbloomberg.gif\" alt=\"Bloomberg - Chint Group Corp\" width=\"1158\" height=\"266\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maybe something got lost in translation and they actually mean &#8220;low voltage appliances&#8221;.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CHINT Solar, or Astronergy as it&#8217;s generally called, started producing solar panels in 2006.\u00a0 Their site says they have the capacity to produce 3.5 gigawatts per year.\u00a0 It also says they have the capacity to produce 2.5 gigawatts per year:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33487 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/conflict.jpg\" alt=\"Astronergy large scale solar energy\" width=\"713\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/conflict.jpg 713w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/conflict-300x69.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 713px) 100vw, 713px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Either way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hU3YdKa_OJs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">that&#8217;s a whole lot of panels<\/a>, but these days it&#8217;s only enough to make them a medium sized manufacturer.\u00a0 They say they reached 2.5 gigawatts of manufacturing capacity in 2016, so it&#8217;s not hard to believe they are up to 3.5 gigawatts now.<\/p>\n<h2>CHINT Company Culture<\/h2>\n<p>CHINT has a company culture that encourages vigor, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and marching forward pertinaciously.\u00a0 And if you don&#8217;t believe me, check this out:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33480 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chintculture.gif\" alt=\"CHINT Culture\" width=\"733\" height=\"140\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As hard as it may be to believe, &#8220;pertinaciously&#8221; is actually a word.\u00a0 According to Google it means, &#8220;holding firm to an opinion or a course of action&#8221;.\u00a0 So, thank you CHINT for teaching me English I didn&#8217;t know.\u00a0 Whether or not it&#8217;s a good idea for you to be using English words that even I don&#8217;t know &#8212; a writer who has been married to a journalist, a professor of literature, and a lawyer &#8212; is another question.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s always good to learn something new.<\/p>\n<h2>CHINT&#8217;s Chairman<\/h2>\n<p>The Chairman of CHINT is Nan Cunhui.\u00a0 And here he is:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33483 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chairmannan.jpg\" alt=\"CHINT Chairman - Nan Cunhui\" width=\"585\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chairmannan.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chairmannan-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He is not just known as Chairman Nan.\u00a0 His vast array of titles and awards &#8212; taken verbatim from the CHINT site &#8212; include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spokesperson of China&#8217;s emerging China private enterprises.<\/li>\n<li>Outstanding Chinese characteristics of the builders of socialism<\/li>\n<li>CCTV2002 China Economic Person of the Year<\/li>\n<li>Eleventh China Top Ten Outstanding Youth<\/li>\n<li>The first Chinese outstanding private entrepreneurs<\/li>\n<li>China&#8217;s overall well-off special contribution figures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Being an emerging, outstanding, socialist, private entrepreneur, and economic person is very impressive\u00a0 Not only that, he also came 11th out of 10 of China&#8217;s outstanding youth.\u00a0 When you think about how many youth there are in China, that is something truly special.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33485\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33485\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chairface.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chairface.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chairface-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">And here is a literal Chairman<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Astronergy Solar Panels are Tier 1<\/h2>\n<p>Astronergy is a tier one manufacturer of solar panels.\u00a0 They were apparently anointed with this status by Bloomberg in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Tier one means banks and financial organisations are willing to lend money to large scale solar energy projects using those panels.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a direct measure of quality, but panels that are crap aren&#8217;t going to get tier one status, so you can be confident these solar panels are most likely reliable.<\/p>\n<h2>Product Warranty: 10 Years Or 12 For Double Glass<\/h2>\n<p>Conventional Astronergy solar panels have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 10 year product warranty, and&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>A 25 performance warranty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their double glass panels have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 12 year product warranty, and&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>A 30 year performance warranty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While I am not a lawyer<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/astronergy-solar-panels\/#en-33316-1' id='enref-33316-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(33316)'>1<\/a><\/sup>, I am confident under Australian law a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/warranty-and-law\/\">25 or 30 year performance warranty is effectively a product warranty<\/a>.\u00a0 But overseas this is often not the case and the longer the product warranty the more confident you can be the solar panels will last long term.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years ago most tier one solar panels only had a 10 year product warranty.\u00a0 But this has been improving and 10 years is now towards the low end.\u00a0 As Astronergy seems very confident about their quality, hopefully they&#8217;ll get around to increasing it soon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33528\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33528\" class=\"wp-image-33528 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mickyangelo.jpg\" alt=\"CHINT - Solar Energy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mickyangelo.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mickyangelo-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mickyangelo-768x256.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clearly CHINT Solar employed the Michelangelo of Photoshop to create this masterpiece.\u00a0 It has solar panels, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2019-09\/09\/c_138378740.htm\">dopey looking electric flying car<\/a>, and an outdoor solar panel fabrication plant with a robot just waiting to hand a solar panel to anyone passing by.\u00a0 One worker is cradling the rising sun in his hands. Or at least I hope it&#8217;s a rising sun. If it&#8217;s not, they have spectacularly messed up the orientation of their panels.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Ridiculous Maintenance Conditions For Warranty<\/h2>\n<p>You are protected by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afta.com.au\/uploads\/292\/consumer-guarantees-a-guide-for-consumers_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australian Consumer Guarantees<\/a> no matter what a written warranty might say, so under Australian law you don&#8217;t have to tolerate ridiculous provisions they may contain.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s always better to have a written warranty that&#8217;s free of bullshit so you can feel confident you won&#8217;t have to fight a solar panel manufacturer, or take them to a consumer tribunal or small claims court, to have them to live up to their obligations.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the Astronergy warranty document has a doozy of a dodgy clause.\u00a0 Their warranty reads:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33494\" style=\"width: 1036px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33494\" class=\"wp-image-33494 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/doozycondition.gif\" alt=\"Astronergy solar panels warranty condition\" width=\"1026\" height=\"204\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The black line just indicates a break where I cut out some stuff that was boring.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Looking up their installation manual for the maintenance recommendations I see this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33495 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/cleanupperiod.gif\" alt=\"Astronergy - solar panel cleaning\" width=\"1047\" height=\"349\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So in order to keep your warranty, you have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cleaning\/\">have the panels cleaned<\/a> at least once a month or right away after &#8220;dust wind&#8221; and you have to record the weather conditions every day with a camera.\u00a0 This is completely nuts and when you add up the costs of having solar panels cleaned at least once a month as well as after &#8220;dust winds&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33496\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astrocalculate.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"357\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;it blows the economic benefit of rooftop solar power out of the water.<\/p>\n<p>These conditions were obviously written with a large solar farm in mind.\u00a0 The sort of place where someone is paid to monitor things full time.\u00a0 But the fact they haven&#8217;t updated their warranty for residential solar installation doesn&#8217;t give me confidence they are adequately focused on the residential side of their business.<\/p>\n<h2>Astronergy Is A DNVGL PV Scorecard &#8220;Top Performer&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnvgl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DNVGL<\/a> is a Norwegian standards organisation that used to subject solar panels to rigorous testing and then publish the results &#8212; or at least some of them &#8212; in their annual PV Scorecard report.\u00a0 Last year the part of DNVGL that does the testing was split off and is now called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PV Evolution Labs<\/a>, but they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panel-scorecard-2019\/\">continuing the work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers don&#8217;t have to pay to have panels tested every year.\u00a0 Astronergy told me they didn&#8217;t have any tested for this year&#8217;s report.\u00a0 But they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/dnv-gl-2018-solar-panel-test\/\">tested for 2018<\/a> and did well.\u00a0 Four reliability tests were performed and an Astronergy solar panel made it into the &#8220;Top Performer&#8221; category in each:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33413 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astroenergydnvgl2018topperformers.jpg\" alt=\"DNVGL 2018 PV module scorecard - Astronergy Solar\" width=\"752\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astroenergydnvgl2018topperformers.jpg 752w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/astroenergydnvgl2018topperformers-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Manufacturing Locations<\/h2>\n<p>CHINT Solar\/Astronergy produces solar panels in China and has a solar cell factory in Thailand.\u00a0 As far as I can tell they don&#8217;t have manufacturing facilities in other countries. \u00a0 They did buy a factory in Germany in 2014 after Conergy ran into financial problems, but sold it this year.<\/p>\n<p>Frankfurt named a street &#8220;Chint Avenue&#8221; after they bought the factory, but I can&#8217;t see it on Google Maps now.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s just like I&#8217;ve always said &#8212; never trust Germany when it comes to naming streets and always keep an eye on them around Poland and the Low Countries.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/astronergy-solar-panels\/#en-33316-2' id='enref-33316-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(33316)'>2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Colour Matching Of Cells<\/h2>\n<p>Manufacturers of premium solar panels normally put effort into making sure the appearance of the cells in their panels are consistent.\u00a0 Lower cost manufacturers don&#8217;t always do this and so panels can end up with solar cells with slightly different colours that give them a patchy appearance.\u00a0 Astronergy told me they put a lot of effort into matching cell colour, giving each solar panel a uniform appearance.\u00a0 This is not something I would expect from a company mostly focused on solar farms, so maybe they&#8217;ve put more thought into the residential side of things than their warranty document suggests.<\/p>\n<h2>They Have An Australian Office &#8212; If You Can Find It!<\/h2>\n<p>Astronergy have an office in Kent Town, Adelaide.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it&#8217;s difficult to find if you search for Astronergy &#8212;\u00a0 which is no doubt what many people will do.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/astronergy-solar-panels\/#en-33316-3' id='enref-33316-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(33316)'>3<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 Instead you have to look for CHINT Solar.\u00a0 Here is evidence from Google Maps that it does exist:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33501\" style=\"width: 913px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33501\" class=\"wp-image-33501 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/googlemaps.jpg\" alt=\"Chint Solar (Australia) Astronergy office location\" width=\"903\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/googlemaps.jpg 903w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/googlemaps-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/googlemaps-768x493.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You can stop by CHINT Solar\/Astronergy between getting some rubber from Clark, having a pint in The Maid (where Jono used to work before SolarQuotes) and attending the Belly Dance Arabesque.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>CHINT Solar\/Astronergy Panels Could Be A Good Deal<\/h2>\n<p>CHINT Solar\/Astronergy solar panels are tier one, which indicates they should be reliable and the representative I talked to said the company was dedicated to building a good reputation in the Australian residential market.\u00a0 If true, they should be ensuring every panel they send here is reliable and made from quality materials.\u00a0 As they are competitively priced they could be a good choice for a low cost but reliable system.<\/p>\n<p>Before getting them I would want their warranty document improved.\u00a0 I would also prefer it if their product warranty was longer, but maybe it won&#8217;t be long before CHINT stretches it out over a few more years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33526\" style=\"width: 888px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33526\" class=\"wp-image-33526 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chintmap.jpg\" alt=\"Chint Solar\/Astroenergy global footprint\" width=\"878\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chintmap.jpg 878w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chintmap-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/chintmap-768x418.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What the hell, CHINT?
