{"id":33324,"date":"2019-09-09T08:50:15","date_gmt":"2019-09-08T22:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=33324"},"modified":"2019-09-09T08:51:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-08T22:21:36","slug":"climate-energy-wa-mb1206","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/climate-energy-wa-mb1206\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change And Energy In Western Australia &#8211; Issues Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/climate-energy-wa.jpg\" alt=\"Climate change and energy - Western Australia\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/climate-energy-wa.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/climate-energy-wa-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/climate-energy-wa-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/climate-energy-wa-1024x538.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>WA&#8217;s McGowan Government is calling on Western Australians to have their say on climate change policy, including issues related to energy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Government released its &#8216;Climate change in Western Australia &#8211; issues paper&#8217;, which covers 11 focus areas including transforming energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>Around 28% of dwellings in Western Australia have solar panels installed<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/climate-energy-wa-mb1206\/#en-33324-1' id='enref-33324-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(33324)'>1<\/a><\/sup> and large\u2011 and small\u2011scale renewables generation currently supply 16 per cent of annual energy needs in the State&#8217;s South West Interconnected System (SWIS).<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/climate-energy-wa-mb1206\/#en-33324-2' id='enref-33324-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(33324)'>2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>However, energy-related emissions are apparently still rising in the SWIS. According to the issues paper, emissions have increased by around 16 per cent since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The paper asks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the main challenges for decarbonising Western Australia\u2019s electricity supply while ensuring adequate generation capacity, security and reliability?<\/li>\n<li>What are the most effective ways to overcome these challenges by 2030?<\/li>\n<li>Should the electricity sector make a pro\u2011rata (or greater) contribution to Australia\u2019s national greenhouse gas emission targets?<\/li>\n<li>How fast do you think the transition of the electricity sector should occur?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Energy Emissions Reduction A Big Task<\/h2>\n<p>The paper notes a 26 per cent \u2018pro\u2011rata\u2019 reduction for the SWIS &#8211; which is consistent with Australia\u2019s Paris Agreement commitments &#8211; would require emissions to be slashed by 36 per cent from current levels; which is a significantly greater task for WA compared to reductions in the National Electricity Market (NEM) where emissions have already declined by around 20% since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>While detailing some of the challenges of more renewables, the paper also notes cost reductions in battery storage combined with renewable sources such as wind power and solar energy could soon put these on par with &#8220;conventional&#8221; sources of reliable energy.<\/p>\n<p>The McGowan Government says public submissions on the paper will help shape the State Climate Policy, which will be released next year and help achieve a goal of net zero emissions for Western Australia by 2050.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;By working together, we can ensure the State is well positioned for a global low carbon transition and improve our State&#8217;s resilience to the effects of climate change,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au\/Pages\/McGowan\/2019\/09\/Climate-change-consultation-to-help-shape-WA-response.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Environment Minister Stephen Dawson.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Just don&#8217;t mention the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wa-fracking-renewables-mb0842\/\">fracking<\/a> &#8211;
