It&#8217;s in the morning and the system is producing four kilowatts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/good-solar-guide\/power-energy-difference\/\"> power<\/a> at that moment in time. What are the chances that your house needs exactly four kilowatts of power at that point? It&#8217;s about zero. When you have a grid connected solar system on your home, it will be operating in one of two modes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Number one, there&#8217;s too much solar electricity being generated.<\/li>\n<li>Number two, there&#8217;s not enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at what happens in each of these situations.<\/p>\n<h2>Scenario One &#8211; Surplus Solar Power<\/h2>\n<p>The image below is taken from Finn&#8217;s Tesla solar monitoring system. In this scenario, there&#8217;s &#8220;too much&#8221; solar power &#8211; the system is producing just over five kilowatts of power (the yellow circle), but at that point in time Finn&#8217;s household is using about two kilowatts (the blue circle). So, we have around three kilowatts of excess solar power being generated.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/solar-electricity-surplus.jpg\" alt=\"Solar energy surplus\" width=\"700\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/solar-electricity-surplus.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/solar-electricity-surplus-300x245.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The levels go up and down depending on how much electricity is being consumed in the house or if the sun goes behind clouds. But whenever there is surplus electricity being generated, it simply goes straight into the mains grid (white circle) in real-time where it will be available for use by other households. There&#8217;s often a payment made to the PV system owner for exporting this surplus called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/feed-in-tariffs\/\">feed-in tariff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Scenario Two &#8211; Solar Electricity Deficit<\/h2>\n<p>The image below is taken from late in the day in Finn&#8217;s house, when the sun is close to setting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34031\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/solar-electricity-deficit.jpg\" alt=\"Solar energy deficit\" width=\"700\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/solar-electricity-deficit.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/solar-electricity-deficit-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finn&#8217;s system is only producing around 1.7 kilowatts of power, but the household is using approximately\u00a0 2.2 kilowatts.
