{"id":397,"date":"2011-01-21T14:51:57","date_gmt":"2011-01-21T05:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=397"},"modified":"2025-09-04T13:48:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T04:18:07","slug":"the-truth-about-solar-panel-performance-and-temperature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/the-truth-about-solar-panel-performance-and-temperature\/","title":{"rendered":"The truth about Solar Panel performance and temperature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does the Aussie heat affect your solar panel performance?<\/p>\n<p>One of the main factors that makes Solar Power so popular over here (apart from the Aussie Pollies throwing wads of money at in in the form of <a title=\"Solar Rebates\" href=\"https:\/\/solarquotes.com.au\/solar-credits-explained.html\">Solar rebates <\/a>and <a title=\"Feed In Tariffs\" href=\"https:\/\/solarquotes.com.au\/solar-feed-in-tariffs-explained.html\">Solar Feed In Tariffs<\/a>) is the fact that the Sun is so damn strong down here.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not rocket science to work out why Solar Power hasn\u2019t really taken off in less sunny climes like my homeland; grey, drizzly old England.<\/p>\n<p>In fact the same 1.5kW system on a roof of my Mum\u2019s quaint cottage in Northern England will produce 45% less energy than if it was on my roof here in Sunny Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>So does that mean the more sun the better, when it comes to generating <a title=\"Solar Power\" href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\">Solar Power<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>That would kind of make sense, right?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, as with most things in this life, it is a bit more complicated than that.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In fact when it comes to solar power you can have <strong><em>too much sun.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Say What?!?<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, most solar panels\u2019 power outputs start to degrade if the temperature of the panel goes over about 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C.<\/p>\n<p>This is why, if you look at the specification label on a <a title=\"Solar Panel Types\" href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/types-of-solar-panel.html\">solar panel<\/a>, most manufacturers quote the solar power output at a panel temperature of 25degC.<\/p>\n<p>So does that mean that if it is 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C outside and a clear blue sky then your panels will be performing to their rated output?<\/p>\n<p>Err\u2026 no.<\/p>\n<p>Because, if the air temperature outside is 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C, that dark solar panel baking on your roof is going to be closer to 50<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C.<\/p>\n<p>So how much solar power will you be losing on a 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C day if the panel manufacturer has quoted power output at a solar panel temperature of 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C?<\/p>\n<p>To work that out we need to know the solar panel\u2019s \u201cMax Power Temperature Coefficient\u201d, which should be on the solar panel\u2019s specification sheet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A typical value for this is 0.4% per <strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C.<\/p>\n<p>Which means that for every degree that the solar panel is above 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C the\u00a0 power will fall 0.4%.<\/p>\n<p>So on a cool 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C day where the panel is cooking at 50<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C, you will be losing 10% of your solar power.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the calc:<\/p>\n<p>0.4% x (50<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C -25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C) = 0.4% x 25<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C = <strong>10%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And on days when the mercury breaks 40\u00b0C you can be losing close to 20% of your solar power.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why you can often find that on the hottest days those solar panels on your roof are actually producing less solar power than usual.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for solar panels that perform well in hot Australian weather, then here\u2019s a list of some popular solar panel brands and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/temperature-coefficient\/\">temperature coefficients<\/a>, the best performing (temperature-wise) are at the top.
