{"id":40544,"date":"2020-06-15T15:53:44","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T05:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=40544"},"modified":"2020-06-16T15:13:03","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T04:43:03","slug":"pvdynamics-solar-roof-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/pvdynamics-solar-roof-system\/","title":{"rendered":"New Solar Carport Design Allows 72 Panels To Be Installed In One Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_40559\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40559\" class=\"wp-image-40559 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/solar-carpark.jpg\" alt=\"solar carpark\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/solar-carpark.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/solar-carpark-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/solar-carpark-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/solar-carpark-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don&#8217;t you wish rooftop solar was this easy? 72 panels installed in a day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is cool: PVDynamics in South Australia has come up with a fast, low-labour way to put solar panel roofs on outdoor structures such as pergolas and car parks. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Installer Corey Evans of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installer-review\/exceed-solar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exceed Solar<\/a> (a SolarQuotes client) sent us the video below of the car park installation he put together using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvdynamics.com.au\/\">PVDynamics system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Solar carpark 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AIrOd86sBwc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Architect and director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installer-review\/exceed-solar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PVDynamics<\/a>, Andrew Ferris, took the time to talk to SolarQuotes about the company\u2019s invention.<\/p>\n<p>Ferris told us the \u201cbig idea\u201d in the company\u2019s Series 100 solar roofing system was to create a shade structure that can pay for itself over time.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he said, while solar power technology &#8211; the panels and the inverters &#8211; keep getting cheaper over time, labour gets more expensive. So PVDynamics wanted to streamline the installation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNormally solar panels are taken to a location, positioned on an installation, and hand-clamped onto the framework individually,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That process requires a lot of handling, and a lot of attention to individual panels.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s also difficult &#8211; to clamp the panels into position, you have to lean over the panels to reach the clamp.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Often in such structures, you end up with installers \u201csitting more on the panels and walking up and down the panels\u201d. This can crack the panels, often invisibly to the naked eye, and Ferris said manufacturers don\u2019t respond well to a warranty claim when you send back a failed panel that has a boot-print on it!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn our system, you slide the panels into the rails from one location. It could be three panels or six &#8211; we\u2019ve done a structure of three two-metre panels, it was very easy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe panels slide into position, and the clamping mechanism is operated from underneath the rail. Everything is done from underneath the rail.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Alas, since the installer works from underneath the structure, the PVDynamics system isn\u2019t suitable for the rooftop PV market &#8211; but even so, there\u2019s a potential for household applications in carports and pergolas.<\/p>\n<p>As well as reducing the labour required to install panels on a structure, Ferris said the company\u2019s three years of development work also focused on cable management and waterproofing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have a cable management system built-in, a series of clips that clip into our rails, so you don\u2019t need a screwdriver. It\u2019s all trying to make the installation much faster.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In tipping us off to the story, Exceed Solar\u2019s Corey Evans stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cit\u2019s a really good system, it took two of my guys one day to install 72 panels. They just slot in &#8211; to me, it seemed really quick, really easy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Evans said the speed and ease of installation makes the system highly scalable for the installer.<\/p>\n<p>PVDynamics also thought about lighting, Ferris said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have incorporated into our railing system LED lighting, with polycarbonate cover strips &#8211; so if the customer wants lighting, it can be included.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this stage, only a handful of installs are complete, so each job is pretty bespoke; but Ferris stated ultimately the aim is to turn the system into mass-producible kits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe rail itself is made in Australia &#8211; we have one piece that has come from China, but we can easily get it made here. All the extrusions are done in Australia \u2026 and we\u2019re looking to export.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I asked about wind loading, because that\u2019s a big challenge for any outdoor structure.<\/p>\n<p>Ferris said PVDynamics hired Arup to engineer the product, and that the roofing system is engineered (and has been tested) to survive in cyclonic regions.<\/p>\n<p>In the commercial application, Ferris said, there\u2019s another advantage over just having solar panels on the roof of a building.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese are a very visible sustainability statement\u201d, he said. \u201cIf you put something on the roof, it\u2019s out of sight and out of mind.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In, for example, a Bunnings car park, the owner\u2019s intentions are much clearer to its customers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd because they\u2019re waterproof, you have the option to collect the water as well \u2026 it gives architects and designers the tools to incorporate solar into a building process, in a way that would add value to the design.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is cool: PVDynamics in South Australia has come up with a fast, low-labour way to put solar panel roofs on outdoor structures such as pergolas and car parks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":40559,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[683],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-40544","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-commercial-solar","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.4 (Yoast SEO v27.4) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>New Solar Carport Design Allows 72 Panels To Be Installed In One Day<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"PVDynamics in South Australia has come up with a fast, low-labour way to put solar roofs on outdoor structures such as pergolas and car parks.
