There are only 11 pages of text and graphics, so it&#8217;s not too much of an effort if you want to read the whole thing yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energycouncil.com.au\/media\/18834\/australian-energy-council-solar-report_q2-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But since we live a world where everyone is as busy as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=liiVX55tJ7E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">bees<\/a> &#8212; except for people stuck at home in Melbourne &#8212; I&#8217;ll make use of my surplus of serenity by summarizing the report.<!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>The report says:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Rooftop solar power system installs are still going strong.<\/li>\r\n<li>Home battery installations have dropped.<\/li>\r\n<li>Midday power from solar panels in the eastern states increased by almost 40% over the past two years.<\/li>\r\n<li>Solar farm construction is way down this year compared to the previous two but expected to boom soon.<\/li>\r\n<li>Payback time for rooftop solar is best in Adelaide and worst in Darwin.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2>What Is This &#8220;Australian Energy Council&#8221; Of Which You Speak?<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Australian Energy Council, or AEC, represents 22 electricity and natural gas companies that:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Sell gas and electricity to over 10 million homes and businesses.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>That&#8217;s a lot considering there&#8217;s only 10 million homes and perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/ausstats\/abs@.nsf\/mediareleasesbytitle\/950EC94DB899312ECA2573B00017B8F4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2.3 million businesses<\/a> in Australia.\u00a0 But I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if they are double-counting those with both electricity and gas.<\/p>\r\n<p>What the AEC say they do is this:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Utilising our extensive networks across media, industry and government, we are proactive in public debates and use this platform to promote key strategies, inform consumers, defend the industry against unwarranted or incorrect criticism and advocate for the industry generally.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>So, apparently, they schmooze.\u00a0 But what they&#8217;re famous for is having a logo that looks like three fluorescent bananas stacked on top of each other:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41981 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/banana.png\" alt=\"Australian Energy Council\" width=\"756\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/banana.png 756w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/banana-300x124.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>I suppose it could represent someone smearing coal dust off a window to let the sun shine through, but that might be a little too imaginative.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Rooftop Solar Power Still Going Strong<\/h2>\r\n<p>The report starts off by telling us rooftop solar is still going strong despite the pandemic.\u00a0 I can back up the AEC on this.\u00a0 If there had been a slowdown we&#8217;d definitely know.\u00a0 There was concern earlier in the year about supply chains being disrupted, but that&#8217;s in the past now and reduced world demand means China and other nations are trying to shift as much solar hardware as they can, pushing down prices.\u00a0 While the Australian dollar isn&#8217;t strong, the fact it&#8217;s the highest it has been for a year helps. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The first graph in the report shows small scale solar installations of 100 kilowatts or less are up and the average solar system size has been increasing:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42063 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/systemsize.jpg\" alt=\"Monthly installed solar PV capacity and average system size - Australia\" width=\"976\" height=\"734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/systemsize.jpg 976w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/systemsize-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/systemsize-768x578.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The orange line shows the total capacity of solar systems of 100 kilowatts or less installed each month.\u00a0 While it looks like the orange line falls off a cliff at the end, that&#8217;s a quirk of the data and they&#8217;ve added in a dotted line showing an estimate of what it&#8217;s likely to be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The information comes from the number of Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs that have been created when solar is installed on roofs.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clean Energy Regulator<\/a> administers Australia&#8217;s Renewable Energy Target and says 11.4 gigawatts of small scale solar power systems have been installed since the scheme started.\u00a0 This table from the regulator gives information on the number of small scale renewable energy installations and total kilowatts of capacity, straight from the horse&#8217;s mouth:<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/aec-solar-report-2q2020\/#en-41869-1' id='enref-41869-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(41869)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42001 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cer.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cer-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cer-768x309.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>But the 11.4 gigawatt figure for solar power &#8212; or 11,426,977 kilowatts if you want to be picky &#8212; is only a record of the total amount installed so far.\u00a0 The AER report doesn&#8217;t mention that much of this has been lost. \u00a0 While some of the capacity would have been retired for good reasons, most of the loss has been due to the installation of crap solar.\u00a0 Far too many PV systems installed in this country have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/cheapsystems.html\">cheap and shoddy<\/a> &#8212; or worse, expensive and shoddy.\u00a0 As a result, we do not have 11.4 gigawatts of small scale solar installed.\u00a0 It&#8217;s going to be significantly less.<\/p>\r\n<p>While we&#8217;re slowly winning the fight against shonky solar installers, continued vigilance is necessary.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t go with someone simply because they&#8217;re cheap.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installers\/reviews\/\">Check reviews<\/a> to see if they do quality work and support customers if something does go wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Average System Size is 8 kW<\/h2>\r\n<p>The graph above (no, further up &#8212; that grey thing isn&#8217;t a graph, it&#8217;s a table) shows average system size as a blue line and puts it at just under 8 kilowatts.\u00a0 It has doubled over the past 7 years.\u00a0 But this includes large commercial installations as well as residential.\u00a0 As Michael pointed out in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/aussii-solar-august-20-mb1627\/\">Australian Solar Systems Interest Index<\/a> at the start of August, this July was the first month in which the number of households seeking systems over 6 kilowatts exceeded those looking for 6 kilowatts.\u00a0 This means the mainstay of the residential market is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/6kw\/\">6 to 6.6 kilowatts<\/a>, but we can confirm the average size has been heading up.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Home Battery Installations Are Down<\/h2>\r\n<p>According to the quarterly report which &#8212; once again &#8212; uses information from the Clean Energy Regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/\">residential battery<\/a> installations in the first half of this year are less than half the total for 2019:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42005 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/batterybuying.png\" alt=\"solar + concurrent battery installations\" width=\"1000\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/batterybuying.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/batterybuying-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/batterybuying-768x536.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>If we assume the same number of batteries will be installed in the second half of this year as the first then the total will come to 9% lower than last year. Price decreases and decent offers from Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) could turn this around. Although, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/battery-subsidy-reduction-mb1439\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent reduction<\/a> in the South Australian battery subsidy will hurt SA battery sales.\u00a0\u00a0SA has 46.6% of home batteries but only 7% of the population, so what happens in the Festival State can have a big effect on national figures.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The decline is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/home-battery-forecasts-wrong\/\">not surprising<\/a> as home batteries still aren&#8217;t financially worthwhile for normal households and the majority of early adopters who don&#8217;t mind this already have one.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>NEM Noon Solar Power Up Nearly 40% In Two Years<\/h2>\r\n<p>In the National Electricity Market or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aemo.com.au\/-\/media\/Files\/Electricity\/NEM\/National-Electricity-Market-Fact-Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NEM<\/a>, which is all states except WA (and the Northern Territory), the amount of solar power provided in the middle of the day has increased by almost 40% over two years.\u00a0 This graph shows average power supplied through the day by large and small scale solar in the NEM during the second quarter for the last three years:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42010 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nempvpower.png\" alt=\"Large scale solar and rooftop PV generation profile\" width=\"1004\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nempvpower.png 1004w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nempvpower-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nempvpower-768x339.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1004px) 100vw, 1004px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>That&#8217;s a whole heap of power, especially considering the second quarter (autumn\/winter) is the worst for solar energy generation.\u00a0 Last Thursday the NEM at noon was drawing a total of 21.5 gigwatts of grid electricity.\u00a0 So if solar was supplying its average, 36% of all electricity consumed was coming from solar panels at that time.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/aec-solar-report-2q2020\/#en-41869-2' id='enref-41869-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(41869)'>2<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 That, more or less, represents power that otherwise would have been generated from fossil fuels.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s a damn good thing it&#8217;s increasing.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/aec-solar-report-2q2020\/#en-41869-3' id='enref-41869-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(41869)'>3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<h2>Solar Farm Construction Down<\/h2>\r\n<p>As the graph below shows, large scale solar farm construction in Australia wasn&#8217;t very significant until the second quarter of 2018.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when we entered a renewables mini-boom and the commissioning of solar farms really took off.\u00a0 But for the first two quarters of this year &#8212; while construction isn&#8217;t as slow as three years ago &#8212; the mini-boom appears to be over:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42012 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ozsolarfarms.png\" alt=\"Utility scale solar commissioned in Australia\" width=\"953\" height=\"690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ozsolarfarms.png 953w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ozsolarfarms-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ozsolarfarms-768x556.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 953px) 100vw, 953px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The value of Large-scale Technology Certificates, or LGCs, that those solar and wind farms create is expected to drop rapidly over the next few years, so a decline in construction was predicted.\u00a0 But how much of the decline in solar farm construction has been due to the poor outlook for LGCs and how much as been the result of the pandemic is difficult to say.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Future Solar Farm Construction May Be Massive<\/h2>\r\n<p>While the number of solar farms currently under construction has taken a tumble, the amount being considered is massive.\u00a0 The graph below contrasts what&#8217;s being built now with has been publicly announced in the NEM:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42014 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/committed.png\" alt=\"Proposed large scale solar energy projects in NEM states\" width=\"976\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/committed.png 976w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/committed-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/committed-768x456.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The announced amount comes to 19.644 gigawatts, which is eight times the 2.415 gigawatts under construction now.\u00a0 To put it into perspective, I made this table showing the amount of generating capacity in the NEM last financial year:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42017 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nemexistcapacity.png\" alt=\"NEM generating capacity by source\" width=\"540\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nemexistcapacity.png 540w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nemexistcapacity-300x297.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nemexistcapacity-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>If all the announced projects go ahead, the new solar farm capacity will be more than Australia&#8217;s current black coal capacity.\u00a0 If half is built it will still be twice the brown coal capacity.\u00a0 While one gigawatt of solar farm capacity will only produce around one-third as much energy as one gigawatt of coal generation currently does, if only one-third of the nearly 20 gigawatts of proposed solar farms are built it will still be more than enough to cause problems for Australian coal power.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>While it&#8217;s not possible to know how many of the proposed solar farms will go ahead, it is likely to be a lot.\u00a0 The way these things generally work is many will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/gulgong-solar-denied-mb1633\/\">cancelled<\/a>, but there will be additional new proposals as time goes by.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Rooftop Solar Payback &#8212; Adelaide Amazing, Darwin A Downer<\/h2>\r\n<p>In the final section of the report, the AEC gives the results of their payback calculations for rooftop solar panels in capital cities.\u00a0 According to them, Adelaide has the best payback time, while Darwin has the worst.\u00a0 This is a tragic result for Territorians, as Darwin is the capital with the second-highest output for rooftop solar.\u00a0 Perth just manages to beat them with around 3% more generation from identical north-facing solar systems.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The reason why Darwin does so poorly is because they have the highest installation costs in the country and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/feed-in-tariffs\/nt\/\">NT solar feed-in tariff<\/a> has recently been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/nt-solar-tariff-mb1474\/\">slashed<\/a> from Australia&#8217;s only one-to-one tariff equal to the cost of grid electricity, to just 8.3 cents per kilowatt-hour.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>This graph shows the payback times for 3, 4, and 5 kilowatt solar systems:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42019 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppayback.png\" alt=\"Payback period for rooftop solar power in Australia\" width=\"971\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppayback.png 971w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppayback-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppayback-768x381.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>For a 5 kilowatt system, Adelaide comes in at around 3 years.\u00a0 Most of the other capitals can pay for themselves in 5 years or less.\u00a0 This would include Melbourne if the Victorian Government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/victorian-solar-rebate.html\">$1,850 solar rebate<\/a> is included, but that hasn&#8217;t been accounted for in this calculation.\u00a0 Hobart has the second longest payback period due to low levels of sunshine on the Apple Isle and higher than average installation costs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The graph doesn&#8217;t show simple payback periods, which are called &#8216;simple&#8217; because they are just how many years it takes for savings on electricity bills to equal the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">cost of the solar system<\/a>.\u00a0 Instead, the results on the graph above take into account the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_value_of_money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">time value of money<\/a> by using a discount rate of 3.24%.\u00a0 While some would say I&#8217;m putting this too&#8230; simply&#8230; that&#8217;s roughly equivalent to having a home loan you could put money towards instead of investing in solar panels.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Things get interesting if the discount rate is increased to 5.87%, as it causes the results to get kind of crazy for Darwin and Hobart with the payback period in both capitals being given as over 30 years, as shown in the graph below:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42021 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppaybackhidis.png\" alt=\"Payback period for solar PV at a higher discount rate\" width=\"972\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppaybackhidis.png 972w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppaybackhidis-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rootoppaybackhidis-768x387.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 972px) 100vw, 972px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>While I haven&#8217;t bothered to try to replicate their calculations, I suspect this actually means that &#8212;
