Even more so when he says solar will be the world\u2019s most popular energy source by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>For the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.unsw.edu.au\/people\/scientia-professor-martin-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of New South Wales\u2019 Prof. Martin Green<\/a> is considered one of the world\u2019s leading PV researchers. His department\u2019s technological breakthroughs in silicon cell efficiency have not only given us the solar panels we know today but also put Australian PV research at the centre of world PV technology.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The costs of solar will halve again by 2025 is my prediction,&#8221; he told a conference in Sydney on Wednesday. &#8220;We are at 60 cents per watt manufacturing now but we will get down to 30 cents per watt some time before 2025.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly Prof. Green suggested that previous reports showing solar as contributing around 25 percent of the world\u2019s energy look to be well short of the mark. He also adds that systems will adapt in accordance with this apparent solar fait accompli.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;What will happen now, and we are starting to see it already, is that the world&#8217;s energy systems will start to evolve to adapt to this new technology.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course Prof Green\u2019s points are in stark contrast to that of Prime Minister Abbott who, in suggesting that coal will be a standard source of energy for decades to come, seems to fly in the face of common sense.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed Mr Abbott\u2019s spruiking of coal has got to the point where he is almost sounding like a salesman for fossil fuel. Perhaps like many of his predecessors, Mr Abbott is looking towards a life after politics? Or is this a bit harsh?<\/p>\n<p>Prof Green made two clear claims in his address:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>That the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">cost of solar<\/a> PV technology will fall by 50 percent in the next ten years.<\/li>\n<li>That solar will inevitably be the energy source of the future by 2050.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is his second point that resonates. As Giles Parkinson <a href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/2014\/martin-green-father-of-pv-says-solar-costs-to-halve-by-2025-79017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states in his column<\/a>, the claim that solar will be the world\u2019s most popular energy source is not new. Indeed this is backed up by research from the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Green dismissed suggestions that coal will continue to be a viable energy source.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t see CCS [carbon capture and sequestration] working \u2013 there are too many issues and it is too expensive. We are talking about PV producing electricity at a lower cost than present coal, not coal plus sequestration.
