This week, we recount the story of how Solar Analytics\u2019 R&amp;D head Jonathon Dore used his company\u2019s monitoring data to dramatically reduce curtailment of output from the solar power system at his Blue Mountains home.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dore\u2019s experience came to our attention when he Tweeted his comment on an ABC story about curtailment:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I had the same problem with voltage limiting my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/solarenergy?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#solarenergy<\/a> output, but my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SolarAnalytics?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SolarAnalytics<\/a> monitoring gave me the evidence to get it fixed. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/abc730?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#abc730<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1AWtJM63uL\">pic.twitter.com\/1AWtJM63uL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jonathon Dore (@jonathondore) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonathondore\/status\/1295507980406804481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 17, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The ABC was discussing a UNSW research project for the Energy Security Board we covered in July, which found that the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/lv-network-over-voltage\/\">solar PV on low voltage network voltages<\/a> is far less than the networks\u2019 operational decision to tolerate higher voltages.<\/p>\n<p>In the ABC story, Andrew Dillon of Energy Networks Australia emphasised the need for more data &#8211; and that\u2019s where Dore\u2019s experience comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Dore installed his solar power system in October 2018 and given his role at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solaranalytics.com\/au\/\">Solar Analytics<\/a>, he made sure he had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/good-solar-guide\/monitoring-systems\/\">good solar monitoring<\/a> from the start.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI could see fairly quickly I was getting curtailed,\u201d Dore said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Being installed to post-2015 standards, his solar system supports curtailment rather than simple cut-off, which made the impact less obvious than if his exports dropped to zero. But his monitoring system presents a daily summary of what it would expect to export versus what was measured and he could also see the impact of his own consumption on exports.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf I turned on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/air-conditioning\/\">air conditioner<\/a>, the power output from the PV went up, because the aircon took the voltage down\u201d, Dore explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd with Solar Analytics data, we could see the grid voltage rising to over 250V.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In spite of his contacts within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/grid-connection\/\">distributed network service providers<\/a> (DNSPs), Dore decided to follow up the issue the same way any other Endeavour Energy customer would.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI wanted to go through the customer experience, so I went on the on the website, hit \u2018general inquiries\u2019, and filed my query, saying I could see the voltage was high on all three phases.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To his surprise, Endeavour got back to him the same day, and in the afternoon a technician arrived to tap down the transformer on the two phases with the highest voltage.<\/p>\n<p>The technician explained that the provider was taking the voltage down not to support Dore\u2019s solar system, but for the safety of customers\u2019 appliances.<\/p>\n<p>With the distribution network 5V lower than it had been, Dore said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cthe system is back to its full output, and the expected-to-measured export ratio on the Solar Analytics dashboard was back up to 100 per cent\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With his R&amp;D hat on, Dore believes this application for Solar Analytics data will become increasingly common. He said at the moment solar monitoring data is used mostly by installers, because they have the skills to use the data.<\/p>\n<p>The export expected-versus-measured report lets the system owner or retailer take the data to their DNSP and get them to fix issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMostly, DNSPs re pretty good when they find out about overvoltage &#8211; the problem is, they don\u2019t usually find out about it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said the networks are caught in a Catch-22 situation: they have standards, and if someone comes to them with data about overvoltage, they\u2019re obliged to fix it. However, they don\u2019t have enough people to fix every distribution transformer all at once.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBack in the old days, the DNSPs were the enemy &#8211; now, they have good people, but they\u2019re trying to do a big job.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The other problem is simply money: networks don\u2019t believe customers would be willing to pay for ubiquitous collection of and access to LV network data.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have been working on an automated detection algorithm to detect this issue more cleanly, and let people know what\u2019s going on,\u201d Dore said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What Solar Analytics can see is most systems are fine &#8211; it\u2019s just a few that are taking a \u201cmassive chunk\u201d out of homeowners\u2019 production.<\/p>\n<p>And the system that\u2019s curtailed might just be yours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The phrase \u201cthe power of data\u201d is already a cliche, but only because it\u2019s true.
